Hey people I am looking to purchase a used or new laptop from eBay and I was wondering which to get. What brands do you guys recommend? I have been looking at Dell, IBM, and Sony. The specs that I am seeking at processor over 300 MHZ Ram 64 hard Drive above 4. Thats about it. The only things I will really do on the machine is Internet, Write Java programs and use word processor maybe a couple other things but not graphics work. Thank you all for your replys.

Laptops are expen$ive to fix, so unless you can take care of problems yourself, I would suggest you buy from a reliable source and get something with at least a basic warrantee. As far as brands - I've used a couple different NEC's over the past 5 years with very few problems. In fact, my sister is still using my original NEC Pentium 75 mhz laptop. The only service needed has been replacing the main battery and the CMOS battery. Of course, others will have different experiences and opinions.

Stay away from Compaq. I work in a shop that services them and almost every week we get in more for in-warranty repairs. My own preference to stay away from the Accupoint (or should I say eraserpoint) pointing device. It's hard for me to use, I'll take a touchpad any day.

Now buying from Ebay:

I just took a quick scan of the current adds in the Going Going Gone sections of each of the manufacturers you mentioned and with the specs you were looking for (300+ mhz CPU, 64meg RAM and 4+ gig hard drive) for the most part it looks you would pay $1000+. There are many websites that you can get new laptops with a return policy and warranty in that price range.

I have had alot of experience with IBM's and Dell laptops and I would stay away from the IBM's. They seem alot more expensive to fix then Dell's and I really like Dell's support.

I would try to find a Dell myself.
