So when's Bill G coming over to dinner with his jack booted thugs ??
According to the stats on microscmhucks website 24% of all software being used today is pirated.
As much as I'm not entirely in agreement with billy boys eula concerning the software "license" I purchased ($89 oem xp pro) It's what I installed in the new box I built saturday night. And yes when I run it side by side with my 98 se box, both with a fresh install of sygate firewall, the xp box is constantly trying to send out info to the microschmucks servers where the 98se box just reports what I open. Whats Bill wanna know?? who to sell a e-mail spam list to? Ok he likes cars ... sell his name to road and track.
I go to get my music and oops! I've just violated my eula. if I hook up to play UT with a group of people, OOps I did it again. Sorry brittany. I wonder how many Irrate "license owners" are gonna call up screamin and yellin because they changed their vid card or hdd or nic, or re-loaded for the umpteenth time and are now being told they have to call some cretin to explain why they are in need of reactivation. prolly aint even a toll free call, is it?.
By charging what billy boy does for his product he actually attracts piracy. Hmmmmmmmmm how many copies of xp has been sold to date? $299 for a full install of xp pro. Now thats high seas piracy. If you sell it for a reasonable price most people will just say it's not worth it to take the chance and download some copy of XP pro corporate, onlt to find it full of virii. Or if it does work end up having microschmuck shutting it and their box down with an "update"... How many times have you heard geniuses bragging how they got their XP for free, and say " I can even update it without any hassles" how many rogue copies of XP are out there with the serials that begin "FCKGW-RHQQZ"
not to worry I won't post the rest of that one. LOL.
So while this box runs XP pro (legally) my older box, a 1.2 celley o/c'd to 1.5 on a soyo board with an 8500 ati card in it. Will be experiencing the wonderful world of linux (mandrake 8.2). and if all works well in the open source world, my new box will get it as well.

the more I hear about XP the farther I will stay from it, still using 98 and satisfied with it. :(

I'v been useing xp for about 6 months and I don't get spam or anything. I don't care if Billy goats takes my stuff, because he ain't got nothin to take except games that he made and a lot of MP3s:p

I love XP because its not the boring old gray look. I like how it is as stable as 2000 and as fast. I use style xp so I don't look at the standerd lunar blue.

If the OS is 'phonong home', M$ is using your phone line/cable, isn't that a form of bandwidth piracy? Slows the connection for the user...

I'd also consider it a form of taping the phone line without a warrent or just cause. Highly illegal and a federal offense there Billy!:p :t

And, making us buy 3 licences, essentially buy 3 copies for each computer IN THE SAME HOUSE is just daylight robbery, it is MORALLY wrong, and should be an offence also.

It can phone home all it want's. You gave your permission for it to do so, read the eula. It's all done to "improve the enduser experience".
It's point blank simple. They were going to do it this time with XP but made a judgement call before release. Eventually with microschmuck your going to be paying as you would a utility bill. With 1. A basic monthly fee to keep it on your box. And 2. with that monthly fee you'll be allowed so much usage of the product and will be billed in addition for any usage over your basic monthly allotment. Same way some of the greedier ISP's did and still do charge.
Billy boy is heading to be the biggest international utility ever.

If what you say is true, and all this is implemented into the next OS......... only people ignorant to it will buy it.

None of us will, we'll all stick to Win2kPro.

Only bad thing is, 80% of the population are ignorant to it and will spend their £100 on the new M$ O$.

Of course! When most of the users are offered "free" technical support included in that monthly fee (some local and toll charges may apply) for as long as they use MS's product, they'll all just justify themselves as "knowledgable consumers" <Please continue to hold for the next available microschmuck OS service technician. we are experiencing high volumes of calls at this time and your patronage is of the utmost importance to us here at microschmuck. Your wait time is estimated to be 37 hours and 15 minutes>

Win-XP Search Assistant silently downloads files (http://theregister.co.uk/content/archive/24815.html)

Also DO NOT update media player if you use w2k or an older version of windows. Unless you want to give Bill admin privileges (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/25956.html).

I doubt I will go with SP3 for w2k because I am sure they will try to slide the same **** past us again. And i won't even consider trying Longhorn (http://www.winsupersite.com/faq/longhorn.asp).

Linux is the answer.

What about the cost. I mean Norman's little Bro. Billy Bates (hehe) reek reek (shower scene here!) justifies the HIGH cost of OS because of his supposedly wonderfull tech support. if we must now pay for that then I guess windows is worth about $20 instead of $200- oh wait-no he'll make up some **** to cover his **** and try to justify the ridiculously high cost. No- prob. let him do that. This will be a Linux box then and so will all the other pc's in my house:p
