i've used this same 3D application(3DSMax R4) on my computer before, but after a reformat of my HD and a reinstall of all my apps, it's deciding it doesn't want to work anymore.

when i start it up, you see the starting splash screen as it's loading the DLL's then *REBOOT*. after it reboots itself i go into the event viewer to see what caused the error and see this "MrxSmb". in the event properties it says this:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MRxSmb
Event Category: None
Event ID: 8003
Date: 7/14/2002
Time: 7:20:46 PM
User: N/A
Computer: ILLROOT
Description:
The master browser has received a server announcement from the computer WON that believes that it is the master browser for the domain on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{D1B56F5C-A162-4871-A208. The master browser is stopping or an election is being forced.

any ideas what is causing the reboot?

i'm running Win2k Pro, on a AMD 1.33ghz with 512mb DDR ram.

That error has nothing to do with the problem. It's a networking report. Boot into Safe Mode and go to System Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery. Untick "Automatically Reboot".

i did that and it still reboots when i try to run that 3D application.

i checked the event viewer again, this time i got a bunch of errors, but they all happened when i started in safe mode. all of the errors except one were "Service Control Manager",the one exxeption was a "DCOM" error.

here's a list of the errors in ascending order:
The DHCP Client service depends on the SYMTDI service which failed to start because of the following error:
The DNS Client service depends on the TCP/IP Protocol Driver service which failed to start because of the following error:
The TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service service depends on the AFD Networking Support Environment service which failed to start because of the following error:
The Messenger service depends on the NetBIOS Interface service which failed to start because of the following error:
The System Event Notification service depends on the COM+ Event System service which failed to start because of the following error:
The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
The Remote Access Connection Manager service depends on the Telephony service which failed to start because of the following error:
The server {1BE1F766-5536-11D1-B726-00C04FB926AF} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.
The Alerter service depends on the Workstation service which failed to start because of the following error:
The server {1BE1F766-5536-11D1-B726-00C04FB926AF} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.
when i did boot normally i got the error with "MrxSmb" again.

i have no other problems with the comp, just only when i try to run that 3D app. i've posted at discreet's forums, but i got no answers.

would an upgrade to WinXP help at all, or perhaps another complete reformat of the HD?

What's happening is that the PC is shutting down too quickly for Windows to log the error. It's not there.

Either your power supply is weak or DirectX is corrupted. I would repair:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/en/server/help/recovery_erd.htm

and reapply SP2 and DirectX 8.1. You'll have to reinstall IE5+ too.

the power supply can't be too weak because i've run his app on this same computer before. can power supplies become weak from prolonged use? this power supply is about a year old. it's a 300 watt Antec.

i reapplied SP2 and DirectX 8.1 and IE 5+, but it still reboots everytime i try that 3D app. i have another 3D app and that seems to run fine.

thanks BipolarBill for trying to help me out, if you've got any other ideas, i'd be willing to try anything. i'm thinking i might re-install everythign to see if that does anything.

i would have liked to not have done it, but a reformat of the HD and a reinstall of the app did the trick. guess i'll never know what caused the problem.

thank you Bipolar for trying to help me out. and thanks to all those who read my post. this forum is great.

Glad to be of service. Just a reminder - formatting is usually not necessary with Win2K and XP. Just boot from the CD and reinstall. This will save your data.

I had that happen to me one time ..same symptoms under 98 though. anyways I took me almost a week to find out what the problem was.

the problem was that my cpu fan heatsink got clogged up with lint and stuff.

It was fine operating withing windows (browing the web and easy stuff), but anywhere within 2- 15 secs of playing a game the thing rebooted..

To see if this was my problem I put a house fan right up to my case and sure enough I could play my MDK2 no problem..
I took off the heatsink and sure enough my hs had all kinds of crud.I cleaned it all out and it runs like a champ
