I'm looking to build a system around an AMD 1.0GHz processor and to run Win98SE or WinME. The system will have a Toshiba DVD ROM drive and an HP CR-RW drive. I would like this to be completely hassle free (if that's possible) so I'm hoping for feed back from folks who are currently running an 800-1000 MHz AMD processor and either Win98SE or WinME - what mobo, what VGA card, what sound card, what modem card?

Thx,
Dave

Check this out:

AMD offers suggestions for AMD-certified hardware for Athlon configurations. I also recommend checking out these reviews here at SysOpt:

http://sysopt.earthweb.com/reviews/asus-a7v/index.html
http://sysopt.earthweb.com/reviews/abit-kt7-raid/index.html
http://sysopt.earthweb.com/reviews/k7vza/index.html

My personal opinions:

-Motherboard: Asus A7133 This board is similar to the original Asus A7V, but utilizes VIA updated KT-133a chipset with 133 MHz FSB support (266 MHz effective).

-Video: nVidia GeForce-2 GTS (or MX if you not a big gamer). Here's a couple of MX reviews:

http://sysopt.earthweb.com/reviews/siluro/index.html
http://sysopt.earthweb.com/reviews/geforce2-mx/index.html

-Sound: Creative Sound Blaster Live or Phillips Rythmic Edge audio. Here is a Live review:

http://sysopt.earthweb.com/reviews/sblive/

-Modem: 3COM/USR external v.90 56K modem. I prefer externals for the maximum in operating system compatibility. Plus, I always need a free PCI slot much more than an free serial port.

-Memory: Buy name brand memory, not the generic "house brand". VIA's Athlon chipset to memory compatibility is better than AMD's original Irongate chipset architecute, but cheap memory still often leads to stability problems. Brands I recommend include Atlas, Crucial/Micron, and Infineon.

Good Luck,
Robert Richmond

May I suggest the Abit KT7A-Raid motherboard. This thing is beautiful. It was first suggested to me here for my first AMD system and it is just an amazing board. It will allow you for great upgrade potential.

System:
-Abit KT7A-Raid
-Duron 750
-256mb Kingmax TinyBGA PC133
-30GB ATA100 Maxtor
-16MB Asus Geforce 2 MX
-10x8x32c Acer CD-WR
-SB Live! Value
-Enlight 7237 w/ Sparkle 300W PS
-Win98 (Stay away from ME, its to slow)

Total: ~$800

If you don't already own the CD-RW get a Plextor w/burn proof technology. I've heard a Teac is the same animal!
