Colleagues:

333 MHz Celeron, Biostar i440BX motherboard, Award Bios, used to work fine.

Now getting above error. I've installed new mobo battery twice. Clock continues not to maintain time. Must be part of "Setting Defaults" instruction.

All devices work on computer otherwise. If I enter BIOS/CMOS and correct time, computer boots through Windows completely, no problem. If I turn computer off for few minutes (after correcting time) then turn it back on, computer restarts with no problem, i.e., correct time and no CMOS checksum error.

If I wait longer (overnight), Checksum Error, Defaults Loaded" message reappears with date back to Jan 1998!

While working on this computer (after installing additional SDRAM module), jumper fell on back of my hand from area of IDE devices (HD & CDROM). I don't believe it came from mobo.

Any ideas what could be causing this message? Or what could be causing Checksum Error and Default settings to load if battery is fine?

Thx!

PS: All memory modules are working (pretested different computer)

PSS: If I enter CMOS each day and change ANYTHING, computer boots through and everything works fine as long as it's kept on. Really just a matter of inconvenience having to go into CMOS and changing date & time daily. BUT I'M A NERD AND IPSO FACTO IT'S GOTTA BE FIXED!

O/S please http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Do you have multiple sticks of RAM installed, maybe try booting with just one or if not try to borrow.

IF Win2000->

All Checksum matches-> http://search.microsoft.com/us/SearchMS25.asp?so=RECCNT&qu=Checksum+Error+-+Defaults+Loaded&boolean=ANY&i=05&i=07&p=1&nq=NEW

sorry I couldn't be of more help, the MS pages pointed to both hardware and software glitches. Software of o/s and add-on.

One more thing regarding the battery.

Did ya check its voltage ?

Or correct battery p/n
Some batteries have correct voltage but very little amperage available making for infrequent errors..

Battery terminals, I repair CB radios(read clean)for folks and lots of times the terminals will have transparent corrosion.

I call it corrosion for lack of a better term.

The battery will exude a small amount of caustic/acid and the nickel plated contacts sometimes get a plastic like coating, resistant to low voltage transfer.

Moms micro-recorder was victim of this also..

Thx, Dr. Vette.

Running Win98se.

Two of three 64MB PC100 memory sticks were already installed when computer worked w/o a glitch. I recently upraded the memory in my PIII to PC133 and had leftover PC100 to donate to Celly system. I did remove stick and tried again without new memory addition with no luck.

This computer had NO PROBLEMS prior to attempting to install and configure an extra LPT card. During that process and while adding above mentioned memory, aforementioned jumper fell on my hand, but not from area of mobo. Coincidence?!?

Also, LPT card was causing conflict and I removed it as I could not resolve that.

Battery leakage... possible, though I see no indication of that.

I'll check the links you so generously provided.

Thx.

This may be a long-shot..... but could that jumper that you found be your CMOS Clear jumper?

Rat...

Rat, that's an excellent bit of educated speculation! I envisioned looking over the entire mobo landscape with a magnifier, checking EVERY jumper setting against the diagram in the mobo manual. Your suggestion certainlly narrows the search! I'll give it a shot.

Thx!
