Looking for decent web hosting for little or no money.haha

But seriously something that would serve the needs of the SETI team on these forums. Stats pages, etc.

Thanks

there aren't any that I know of. The best around in my opinion used to be Spaceports.com (www.spaceports.com) but they went the way of so many others. Money available from banner-clicks went downhill fast, people hate pop-ups so all the hosts fight a losing battle. Nearly all the hosts that are free offer no scripting languages other than java/javascript. There are no (decent) ASP, (user defined) CGI, PHP......servers around.

My suggestion pay a little and get a good host.

Thanks guys,

How much disk space would be best. Thenetfirms starts at 25mb for free, then 50mb for $5, 100mb for $10, and 200mb for $15 per month. Transfer files are 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, and 6GB respectively.

I don't think we'll be doing much file downloading just information site basically.

The domain name will cost $25 a year.

What do you think?

the best would be http://powweb.com for 7.77$ / month

250Mb space
25Gb of monthly bandwidth
and much more.

I already have a powweb acount with a page on it that isn't being used so I might just use that. any ideas for eating some of the costs of that without upsetting visitors? maybe one or two inconspicuous ads or something like that?

Why not put your PC's idle time to good use by downloading the seti@home client (ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/setiathome/setiathome_win_3_07.exe) and then joining the Sysopt.com Users 2002 (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/cgi?cmd=team_lookup&name=Sysopt.com+Users+2002) Team. To speed up your WU times try the Command Line Client (ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/setiathome/setiathome-3.03.i386-winnt-cmdline.exe) and SetiHide (http://www.scheit.de/seti/1543.zip). It's much faster than the Windows client. :D
Good SetiHide thread HERE (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=94507). Guide to setting up SetiHide on page 5 of thread.

If you will stay with netfirms, then first try free account.
You can always upgrade and change the status.

Setiteam (http://www.setiteam.com/) is officially up and running.

Thanks to Vibe and eFrisky we even have email!

Now we can play with it a bit at our leisure, but the initial result looks good. :D

I could reccomend a better host, the one i am using now. www.oktagone.net (aim: oktagone). Very nice guy runs it and at a very good price ($15 a year, that's right a year for domain hosting). The only feature he does not have is ASP, but PHP is there along w/ almost anything else. Very highly reccomended!
My site - www.unibrow.net (I am 15, so don't make too much fun of my bad web designing skills hehe)

Nothing wrong with that site. Very good effort IMO.:D

We probably won't be setting up any forum as SysOpt is our main source for that. Maybe a Q&A section and lots of links.

After looking around for the best free webhost I went with freehostit (http://www1.freehostit.com/) .
You get 50mb of space and here is the great thing:
NO ADS! - not a popup, nor on page ad to be seen. It has a great webshell interface, if you don't like using FTP (or you're using it behind a corporate firewall and proxy server like me).

Want proof? Ok... I'm just pushing my website here, but it is really good!

I had nothing but bad experiences with free hosts, so I strongly believe it's much better to pay a few bucks and get decent andreliable service instead.

I recently had to find a new host for my site, and made an extensive review of the best budget hosts I could find. Budget mean somewhere $20-$40 per year. I put all my results in a table that you can download if you like. You'll find it together with my review report at
http://hostingreview.rahn.net

Hope this helps if your free host gets his next hickup.
Still, good luck with the project!

Stephen

Thanks Stephen,

That is a very interesting report and I'm bookmarking it for future reference.

Right now, Powweb is doing the job for Vibe. If he has any future problems he may try it.

Thanks for the responces. :)

Try brinkster.com and WebHost4Life.com - you should find some free hosting packages there, I've used both in the past...I highly recommend them.
