Immediatly i thought it was a virus so i ran a virus check AGV + Mcafee -- Nothing. But i still cant delete it. Tried going into dos, deleting the entire folder!!! im stumped. i dont want to format the whole hard disk just for 1 little file but im wondering if it is somthing to be worried about seeing that i cant delete it

Usually from Dos you can delete it. Have you tried Safe Mode and or right clicked it for properties to see its attributes?

WZSHLEX1.DLL is a Winzip dll, Winzip Shell Extention . You might try replacing the file, it may be corupted. Or turn off Winzip then delete the file. Anyway , something to consider.

i would say someone has been f*cking around with your system mate, i would presume it was a virus even if mcafee didnt spot it, delete it thru dos... deltree i think?

Restart in MSDOS mode to delete it though :)

At prompt type

cd c:\(path of folder containing file to be deleted)

*enter*

then

del (filename to be deleted).(file extension)

and enter again - voila!

LOL - siblings do tend to have a knack of f**king up perfectly good computers.

Can you rename the file or its extension okay or not??

or do you get the same error??

Just adding my two cents.....:)
That one file is probably only a part of the problem. I would look in your programs area for any out of the ordinary folders. Also using explorer go through all the folders and see if any of them relate to this junk. Im sure its embedded into the registry as well. If you find a folder that contains this junk. Try to delete it. Also, look into the registry and see if that folder is also listed in hkey_local machine/software section and delete that one as well.

For a future reference i would install/use regclean 4.3.

Also run system file checker to make sure your system files arent corrupt. type sfc in the run command.

I hope this helps.....Take care and good luck!

Any problems......post back!

cheers guys. ive tried a few virus checkers and reg checkers and they all report no problems.
The file itself i cant do anything with. Just selecting it with the mouse brings up an illegal operation box with the eroor message stated above. im totally stuck. The only thing i can think of to get rid is a dam format, and thats really p****d me off

Hello
It may be a part of a running program Therefore it can't be deleted while this program is running.
I had this problem on a computer at work.Someone downloaded a spyware program that loaded itself with Windows and he tried to get rid of it but couldn't until we disabled the program in "system info startup", (win98se) then we could delete it.
you also might want to check with moosoft and get the CLEANER trojan virus remover. AdAware works too.
Check and see if winzip loads on start up.

be well

If the file were in use by another app you would be given an ACCESS DENIED error rather than the error you reported to us.

If you can rename the file then it suggests it is not currently in use by another program, as again you would get the ACESS DENIED error msg.

I'd have to agree, ACCESS DENIED would happen on a file is use. I get it with the temps that are still in use. An invalid page fault message could be either a badly corrupt file or possibly some viral activity.:x

thanks for the suggestions guys. I havent a clue what it is, as no virus detector detects it as a virus.
But i didnt buy my cdrw for nothing. Its better to be safe than sorry. Im going to format tonight...

It's always a pain in the @rse to have to format a disc full of beloved data, its a shame it came to this, all over one little file too. Oh well - good luck

Geez, I'm glad I was able to get mine gone :) The Idea of rebuilding the system just didn't appeal to me at the moment. Given the right mood on the right day,,who knows. Can't understand why it was not in DOS, possibly a hidden file? Well, you gotta do it sometimes. Could be worth it though,, gets rid of the junk you always seem to accumulate no matter how much you try not to. Good luck:D

no this one was off a "buy it now" from ebay.
Generally i wouldnt buy an electirical good from ebay, but this one was from an actual company and offered a 6 months warrenty on the drive RTB free p+P, so i couldnt ignore it.
I could probably sell my existing 15G hard disk for £20 making it very good purchase and its 7200 ata100 not 5400.

Did you do it yet? It's night-time in the UK, all may be lost!

Don't safe mode into dos, do it off a boot disk. Go to the directory where you saw it and use the ATTRIB command to make sure there are no hidden files in there.

If it doesn't show up with ATTRIB I sympathize with your case. If it does del it if it's a file or deltree it if it's a folder.

Not a bad deal then tricktx, likewise im very wary of buying from auction sites and only really use em to check up my prices when selling second hand junk...now..where was it they were offerign those HDD's.

(PS £20 for that 15gb 7200 is pretty good - although im more into storage space than speed)

The problem you describe may very well be file name spoofing. It is very annoying, and I personally don't know how to deal with it, though I have been able to move these files to another dierctory by starting in safe mode- but I couldn't delete them or even see them in DOS.

In my case, they were on a server I was taking care of, and were being used to house information (which was very well hidden)enabling hackers to store their files illicitly on my system. Which, coincidentally, was all porn.

Question: Do you have a fixed IP? If so, you are more ripe for this type of exploitation. If you do, I would definitely get a firewall, or at the very least a software firewall - even if you have a dynamic IP assignment this is a good idea.

I would love for someone to give me an effective and complete way to deal with this problem. ANyway, I hope this was helpful.

Bigjakkstaffa 15Gb was ample enough for me but i couldnt pass up an offer like ive got.

and datta. thanks for the reply. The file name in question is very very long when looking at it in windows and uses a lot of very lets say colourful words. I can even click on the file even in safe mode without an illegal opp message box appearing. Thats wy im formatting the disk + getting a new one (but thats co-incedental)

Datta

That's what I would do, as well (fdisk it). Though in the example I gave you before, I couldn't do that (It was on a huge, very complicated server). I had to figure out what they had done, then disable it, and then I set up a serious firewall.

If I were you, I'd check around and see if there is anything else amiss. After all, where there's smoke . . .

Also, I'm curious whether your internet connection is protected or not. There are a LOT of hackers who get into other's computers that way and use their facility as parasites.

yeh i play lots of games nut unlike many people i only pay one at a time. So for example i have quake3 on the disk and when im done with it i uninstall it and install the next game. So i only have about 1.5GB of games, 4GB of apps and 4GB of mp3's total 10GB ish and i still had 5 free

True. Our low last February was -32, now we're at 36. Complaining about the weather is a full time occupation in Canada. Oh how I long for the temperate climate of my youth (Sheringham, Norfolk...)
