i tried creating a new task bar as an alternate to the quick launch and linking to the desktop.. but all that did was bring the folder of the desktop contents of the current user... all i want to do is minimize all windows....

Couldn't find anything on technet... thanks guys

E:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Note: insert your own drive letter

Actually what seems to be the problem on this computer is that the contents of the { E:\Documents and Settings\your user name\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch } directory are not present. I think that the Show Desktop icon in this directory may have been just a link file. I need to find the file that it links to so i can complete the shortcut... I cannot find the missing files....

Now then, please don't take offence but the 'Quick Launch' folder is a hidden folder and you have to tell Windows to display these folders (In Windows Explorer, click Tools / Folder Options; click the View tab; under Advanced Settings you will find a line with a radio button where you tell it to 'Show hidden files and folder').

This should then make the 'Quick Launch' folder appear.

Most of the contents are Shortcuts. However, 'Show Desktop' is of the type Windows Explorer Command (extension of .scf).

Try searching for *.scf to see if its been moved to another folder.

I have been viewing hidden folders and files the whole time? The shortcuts have been deleted. Thank you for the extension...

You could always do a 'repair' install of Win XP.

Unlike 9x, XP doesn't 'forget' about all the software you've got installed. I had to do it to fix a problem with Windows Update that just wouldn't go away.
