Napster. I think if you want to give away your music, well, you bought it, right? But you also make artists loose cash.....What do you think?

Well Napster is a very popular programm and yet is also very illegal, in a way. I think that if you buy a CD and you wanna give out your music then just let your friend borrow the CD or somethin and let him do the illegal junk if he wants too. As for throwing it on Napster for other people to get is totaly someones decision as to if they want to screw over the band/group/artist. I have thought about ways to go about Napster legally and my idea is that when you download a song there should be something that deletes the song from your database after about 3-4 days after the DL, turning Napster into a sort of preview thing to where you are prevewing if you like the song or not. Now i know that in a matter of 3-4 days a person can make music CD's with those songs but that would be there choice. There are just somethings that you cant control.

First off, most gamers love music, so I thought this was a good spot, also Im a gamer myself and I care about what gamers think more then old people who dont understand our generation!
I dont think burning music is illigal. SELLING burned music is. That is why Napster is still going. Dont you think if they were breaking the law they would have been shut down a while ago! You already know the answer to that one.

I could care less about the whole lawsuit thingy.
I don't think it's stealing whatsoever. They will never stop mp3s. They may shutdown Napster. Oh well, I'll get them somewhere else. Not too much of a problem.

Napster is fairly unreliable...
Some good FTP sites are on the internet where you can download MP3s without them stopping at 90% (I'm on 56K-Hate when that happens!!!)

I totaly agree with Zell here. Its the whole selling the music and/or changing the music or title to where you can get credit, braking the whole copyright thing.

Doesn't everyone love music, and not just gamers? And where are those old people?
I heard that Napster is going to ask money because of those legallity issues. When you pay for Napster you just pay for the songs and it will be legal (I assume Napster will pay the recordcompanies). For this reason Napster expects to get more users after they start asking money.
I don't use Napster myself, I just download the songs from websites, works fine for me.

Will someone please define old? I'm almost 22 and getting depressed about it... lol

As a program, I can't stand Napster. As for the future of music downloading- Oh, it's GOING to be pay-per-play, trust me.

Heh....pay-per-play...right. Some 14 year old kid will figure a way to get around that.
Personally, i like napster...seeing as i just erased my 3000 mp3 collection due to my unbelievable stupidity...i will be using it quite often...actually, i queue up 30-40 songs to dl on one comp, then open napster up on another comp to search and queue up another 30-40 songs...then switch back...cackle. I'm evil. Oh well...dead topic...thought i'd toss my 2 cents onto the stack of corpses.

I use napster nearly every single day.
my opinion:
There is nothing directly illegal about napster, that's why the court case is taking a while, napster is a medium through which mp3's are shared, it is the act of sharing that is illegal, and it is also this act that the music industry is trying to stop/minimize, whatever one might like to call it.
As always there are 2 sides to a story, some say that napster has increased sales because people use it to preview music before buying it, whereas others say that the music industry is losing money because people don't bother buying music cd's anymore.
We can take it for granted that Napster will become 'pay per play', but we cannot take it for granted that the music industry will achieve anything else, mp3's are too widely used and popular to simply be removed or forbidden.
If/when napster goes down, others will know to be quiet about their methods of sharing.
There is always going to be someone who will find a way around 'control', whether this control is justified or not is another subject, but an obstacle it will not be.
So I am not worrying, and neither should those that like and use napster.
Have a nice day.

A word of advice, when you post a topic you must be able to expect and accept all contributions.
Its not that i am hyped up about the subject, franky i couldn't care less, however i chose to share my opinion since this is what people do in a discussion forum.
Your new here, i hope you will be able to fit in soon http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif.

I understand the artists and publishers side but its no different than recording a song off the radio. So I guess eventually royalties should be paid howerver mp3 format is not the same quality as original, and no money is being exchanged. Napster is only making a file sharing web site, the downloaders would be the offenders if any. Since no money is being exchanged I think its ok.

BMG is pointing Napster toward a service with a FEE. Anticipated roll-out is June or July.
As for me, all I know is I'm buying MORE CD's than ever before...
Savant

I just thought I'd say that I buy MORE cd's since I started using napster.
That'll seem odd, so let me explain:
Being a young and un-employed (intentionally), cash is somewhat short, so naturally I try to save it. That being said I won't buy a CD if I'm not VERY sure it's the one I want right? well with napster I can try things off cd's or even bands I've never heard of, and if I like it, I ussually buy the CD, sometimes it takes me a while, but I get to it. So it seems to me the record companies don't have much to worry about really
As to the leagality: Napster is leagal, there is no law prohibiting a program that allows users to share files, which is all napster is. They have nothing to do with storing or creating the files. HOWEVER the creating of mp3 files off of cd's or other media is questionable, I don't think that is leagal.
Just my thoughts, probably confusing to read, thoughts ussually are.

Come to think of it, I buy alot more CDs after Napster! If I download a song I like, I buy the CD, mostly from like BMG, but you gotta know how to deal with them to come out on top.
King, I didnt mean to affend you, I just wanted to point out that you did put alot down and I ment it in a positive way. Judging from how much you typed one would think you want to defend Napster, so I thought you could send it to them!
