Drives are very cheap now. I go to computer shows all the time and see the IBM 7200 DS for $125-130 for the 10G drive.
This drives is very quiet, fast, and overclockes VERY well.

The WD has a larger buffer than the IBM, and probably runs cooler.

A place for lots of hard drive reviews...

Units from Maxtor and Quantum stand out when it comes to NT performance. The DiamondMax Plus 5120 is a value with the lowest price when it comes to $/GB

Good & cheap? Mutually exclusive, IMO.

No contest. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

Anything else is a compromise. That means you give up what the drives above offer as strong points.

I think that the quantum fireball ka plus 7200 rpm drive blows all those others away, and they are by far as good as ibm, and better than any of the others. Plus, they are like 150 bucks or so for a 9.1 gig.. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I believe I read that IBM makes the new Western Digital 7200 RPM drives. That is why in performance comparisons, they are nearly, if not the same.

A week and a half or two weeks ago, I was able to get the 9.1G 7200rpm IBM drive with the 2MB buffer for $159 with free shipping at NECX. They really don't cost much more than any of these other drives.

You got to pay attention tho'. IBM has Deskstars drives with the same capacity (9.1, 13.5, 18 and 22G) that doesn't have the 2MB buffer...
