Hi PPl,

I have been drawn to SYSOPT, as I just cant fix this problem. I have tried Technet and have had no joy. The problem is:

I execute my Windows Update in Windows 2000 SP2 and recieve the following error message.

_______________________________________

"Thank you for your interest in Windows Update"

"Windows Update is the online extension of Windows that helps you get the most out of your computer."

"You must be running a Microsoft Windows operating system in order to use Windows Update."

How do i get around this? It use to work and then just stopped.

Go to Add/Remove Programs and repair Internet Explorer. If you have a CD with IE6 on it, load it up. You can also manually download and install IE6 directly:

Sorry bud, I have already tried that.... I forgot to mention that i am using IE5.0 SP2 and have updated to 5.5SP2 to see if that fixes, but no joy. My copy of Windows 2000 is also fully licensed to myself.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/en/server/help/recovery_erd.htm

You'll have to re-apply SP2, IE5.5 and DX8.1.

When i go to http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/en/server/help/default.asp?url=/windows2000/en/server/help/recovery_erd.htm

I get this message in the browser...

Unfortunately, your browser does not support the technologies used on this site. Please upgrade to a newer version.

Its a tough one.

You have to upgrade to IE6. Have you tried the link that I gave to you?

Just woke up and read your note......

Okies.... I am going to apply those fixes with DitrecX 8.1 and IE, however i dont think that upgrading to IE6 will fix the problem, as I have already upgraded to Ie5.5 from IE5.01.

I am now thinking that the issue could be the PID ----

The Windows PID is a unique code identifying your version of Windows.

But dont know a way around it!

Boot from the CD and run the repair process. Choose fast repair.

Some things will need to be patched. Use Windows Update.

It's time to reinstall. :(

Do the same steps and choose "Setup" instead of repair. Your data will be preserved, but you'll have to reinstall programs.

I had to do this last time... this has happened to me twice now. The last tiem I did this i reinstalled over the top if my cuurent Win2K and it made no difference. So i had to format and then re-install. Such a nighmare.

I shall re-install... Format and then sit in a corner and cry! :x

There's no need to format and lose your data. Just reinstall.

reinstalling doesnt fix the problem. I tried that last time and it didnt work. I had to actually format and install. I have over 60Gb of data inc programs and maps.

That stinks. Did you manage to back up your data? If you have Partition Magic, you could create a new partition ahead of the old ones and copy your data afterward. When done, delete the old partitions and expand the new one up.

I have PartitionMagic Pro 7.0... I shall do that.
My fears are that this may have been a visual basic script issue.

My fears are that this will happen again, perhaps I try the new Microsoft 2000 GOLD edition, when it is released,

By the way your Gif in the banner below your username resembles me!

It resembles all of us at one point or another. :(

Ace,

I have found the problem................!!! How good is this!

This behavior can occur if the registry contains incorrectly formatted version information for Internet Explorer 5.0.

To resolve this issue, use Registry Editor to change any periods in the Internet Explorer version number to commas in the value data of the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\ {89820200-ECBD-11cf-8B85-00AA005B4383}\Version\

For example, if the value data of the registry key mentioned above is 5.00.2014.0216, change it to 5,00,2014,0216.
