I would like to copy a DVD movie and be able to watch in in all DVD players. I have the Sony DVD Burner, and a source DVD drive in my 1.5GHz computer, so I have enough hardware capabilities, but what type of DVD media should I use and what software should I use? (I can burn all the types except DVD-RW in my drive).

We do not promote copying copyrighted movies here at sysopt, please keep that in mind, check the aup you agreed to here (http://www.internet.com/corporate/privacy/aup.html) when you signed up.

No, I am trying to copy a DVD video from a friend. Its a home-made DVD with his own recorder. I want to be able to also keep a copy for myself before I have to send it back.

There are a few prerequisits before you can do an "on the fly" DVD copy.

First the DVD-Video disc should not be copyrighted. It won't copy.
Second it should fit on the target DVD-R or DVD+R (which one do you have, as sony rebadges both Pioneer A03/4 and Ricoh DVD+RW/R drives).

If both these are met, then you just use Nero DVD-Copy. Simple as that.
