Problem: When I go to shutdown the puter just restarts EVERY time.
system: Win XP, Amptorn board, P4. 256 SDRAM, NVIDIA TNT, SEAGate 40GB

I've taken the board out of the case and tried it on a foam mat, also tried new PS and Memory...have not tried new board or processor

any ideas?

what's this? When you press the button or when you click the 'shut down my pc' thing?

If its the PC button then its ****ed :) OR it doesn't support being turned off, like a PC my bro has, there should be a switch on the back to turn it off/on

i dont know about the shut down my pc button tho...

Hop into bios and disable any setting that make the machine "wake up on LAN", "wake up on modem", "wake up on anything else"...

Failing that remove any NIC or modem and try it like that (or disable them if they are onboard the mobo).

Any other takers?

If it's when you physically press the power button then I suspect that Optimus is right. It still won't hurt to have a look through the bios and see if it is set properly - in addition to those power on options there are also a pile of power management options in most bioses, perhaps one isn't set correctly.

Another option...
Since you're running XP check in Control Panel/Power Options/Advanced. There's an option there to vary what happens when you press the power button. It might not be set to Shut Down.

Good luck,

T

I've also gone to the power options in the control panal and the button is set to turn off. I have all the other advanced power options in windows and in the bios off. I have the mobo outside the case and i'm simply jumping the power on pins with a screwdriver so i know it has nothing to do with the case or button.

isn't there a switch on the back of your case to turn your computer off?

In my ATX case you have to quickly turn it off or it will restart :|

A way to get past this without quickly pressing the button is to switch it off @ the mains :) it doesn't damage the PC as long as you have shut it down via the OS.

... and when you jump the pins the board powers down properly?

If it powers down and up correctly by jumping then the hardware is functional and this has to be soft/firm ware related, right?

Latest drivers reinstalled for the mb? XP is clean and configured correctly?

ps: wake up on usb is an option in bios - could an errant usb device be kick starting the machine?

Ah, a fix. That would be, "I can use many of your current compontents reducing the cost of a new machine that would be faster and more stable than your current platform." ... wouldn't it:)

Sorry we couldn't get it going.

That EasyCD thing is a pain in the ***. I had it installed on a machine and it hid my CDROM (not the burner, the CDROM). Took me two days of wrestling with W2K to figure it out (I'm still sorry for all those things I called you Win2K!):D

EasyCD gets into everything and runs through the registry like a hyper kid in a china shop with a baseball bat.

Glad you beat it into submission... I'll have to add strange restarts to my list of things EasyCD messes with.
