One much older Dell did NOT work with generic memory.

One post suggested they had rerouted the voltage so that you HAD to buy from them.

This was several years ago.

My new Dell Pitiful3 800mhz(non-EB)100MHZ FSB runs on Kingston memory added just fine.

I removed the Dell 64mb stick and stuck in a 128mb PC 100 to eliminate the possibility of a conflict between the two.

If you go to somewhere like Crucial or Kingston.com and go to the memory "configurator" it will try to hit you up for about double as to what regular memory costs, go figure...

Try it is all I know,, If it'll post maybe it'll be OK

Actually it depends on your processor and mobo combo instead of the maker. If it is PIII or Celeron, any ram will work (as long as the ram speed and fsb are comparable...ie PC100 for 100MHz fsb). If you are using a newer Athlon, you have to get the good namebrand RAM like you listed above. But you do not have to buy Dell ram...and it will be more expensive if you buy it fromt hem for the same product.

I have a generic 256mb PC133 stick in my fairly new Dell (August '00).

Is Dell selling Athlon systems now? I didn't think so. I thought it'd take an act of God to make Dell go with AMD.

If you are really worried about getting memory that won't work, go to crucial.com and use their memory configurator. If you type in the exact Dell model you have, it will spit out all their compatible options for ram for it. That is just what I did on my first memory upgrade and it worked great. (Back then it was only $130 for a PC-100 64 mb DIMM! http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif ) Nowadays I either order Mushkin basic PC-133 or try to nab the Kingston ValueRam rebate specials. Chances are if your Dell is a Pentium 2 or 3 it will run just fine on unbuffered PC-133 cas 3 ram. The cheap stuff, probably about $55 to $60 for a 128 MB DIMM. But if you don't want to chance it, then pay the slightly higher price for the Crucial and live happily ever after.
