I have reinstalled everything in my 2-month-old computer, choosing Windows 98 rather than XP.

I have a Gigabyte 7ZXE board with a VIA KT133A chipset, Athlon 1800+ processor, Genuius USB NetMouse Pro.

Under XP, the USB mouse worked fine, without even having to install a driver.

Under Win 98 the computer refuses to recognize the USB mouse, despite my having installed drivers from the original diskette and from the Genius website.

A PS/2 mouse works fine.

What shall I do?

have you checked the device manager to ensure that the Universal Serial Bus Controller(USB Root Hub) is installed and listed without conflict?

Yes. There are no conflicts, but just to be sure I reinstalled the USB Root Hub and the PCI to USB Universal Host Controller.

There seems to be a known problem here that Microsoft relates to at its site, but I think I have done what they suggest (either they're a bit obscure or I'm a bit thick) and to no avail.

The interesting thing is that the side button on the Genius USB mouse does indeed have effect, but not the buttons or the lever.

Another problem is that I cannot shutdown. Clicking on shutdown results in a restart.

These problems were not present when I was using Windows XP and are clearly (?) related to Windows 98 SE.

I don't have a usb mouse so don't get riled. But out of curiousity does Win98 have the same device manger settings as described HERE (http://support.microsoft.com/search/preview.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q280108) in XP?

Welcome to SysOpt, btw. :)

Why not put your PC's idle time to good use by downloading the seti@home client HERE (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/download.html) and then joining the Sysopt.com Users 2002 Team HERE (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/cgi?cmd=team_lookup&name=Sysopt.com+Users+2002) :D

Thanks for the welcome. But what do you by "as described HERE in XP"?

Where?
