here (http://mikescomputerinfo.com/instalunin.htm) is an article re:installing/ uninstalling software that I found using google. There is not much detailed info out there on this subject thou.
A 3rd party software uninstall utility is an option if the software's uninstall program becomes corrupted, etc. The linked article discusses removing folders, registry entries as well. Be careful removing shared dll {dynamic link library files} because there might be other software that use these same files. And if you use regedit , do a complete registry backup first.

it is fairly safe to play with the registry as long as you do not delete anything you are unsure of.
also it is good practice to always back it up first.
when i want to completely remove old uneeded listing from my registry here is what i do...
open the registry editor
back up the entire registry
then choose "edit"---> "find files"---> type in the name of the program you just uninstalled.
delete what you deem uneeded.... most findings will be uneeded, but you will need to use a little common sense in reading what it is you are actually looking at.
you can continue through the whole registry by just pressing "F3(find next)"
