I'm looking to get a second hard drive, my 20 gig is just about filled. I'm looking for a 45 or more gig. I have 200 to spend, maybe a little more. Whats the most amout of storage and best name i can get for this amount. I have an ultra 66 set up.
Thanks

I would say (and most others) that the one to get is the IBM Deskstar 75XGP. It comes in 30,40 and 60 + flavors so I wouldn't worry about finding the size you want.

Here are a few links to IBM 75GXP hard drives. Since you have $200 to spend, I assume you want an IDE hard drive, so the fastest/most reliable IDE hard drive would be the IBM 75GXP line.
45GB IBM 75GXP (http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10245435&loc=101)
30GB IBM 75GXP (http://www.us.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=10252895&loc=101)
The second link is said to be a retail boxed hard drive. I didn't look at the first link too closely, but it clearly states "three year warranty".
IBM invented them and stays in front with new technology. However, their drives tend to run a little HOT.
I'm a Western Digital fan.
IMO, they're both great HDD's. IMB and WD....
Hi,
There is a good article (http://www.tomshardware.com/storage/01q1/010129/u160scsi-04.html) on Tom's Hardware.
Here is another one (http://www.tomshardware.com/storage/00q3/000821/index.html)

Just do a search on hd questions like this. You will find a bunch of info.
Like I said in the other thread, the IBM 75gxp is the best. I have the 45gb model.
Awesome!

OK, I found an IBM gxp 45 gig for 164 plus shipping and then i found a 60 gig for 251 plus shipping, both at 7 bucks for shipping. for the difference in price is it worth to get the 60 giger?? Just so i won't have to upgrade later down the road?

Hasn't Western Digital decided to pull its high-end product line in favor of the low end? Western Digital used to be the best brand name for hard drives, but I'm not so sure anymore. I'd go with Quantum or IBM, definately.

Mike511:
If you have the budget, and you like to store alot of data, get the 60 giger. My first 75GXP was the 30GB, I loved it so much, I bought the 75GB model. Althogh the 7200RPM version may get a bit hot, it is completely worth it.

I haven't ever had experience with this IBM drive all these people are talking about, but at www.pricewatch.com (http://www.pricewatch.com) i took a look and they have some 61.4 gb drives for around 180-200 bucks. Most of them are Maxtor or Western Digital.

I'm not convinced that HD's are not like motor oil and antifreeze, several mfg's put various names on them.
I have a Maxtor with a IBM fru# on it and a IBM p/n.
In regards to Roys statement about IBM running Hot, I think this varies to the individual drive.
My IBM's run cool, Maxtors also.
The only HD's I've had to need some cooling are the Quantum LM20 series(7200) in a 15gb.
Someone here stated that ANY drive that made excessive whining or was too hot to touch was borderline defective..
I can't quote exactly what was said, this was the general idea.
I'd vote for
1. IBM 75GXP 7200
2. Quantum AS 7200
3. Quantum LM 7200
4. Maxtor (?) 7200
Since you said you have ATA/66 set up, I assume you have the stiff, grey cable with the blue end.
This one is "double grounded" to allow for the faster transfer rate..
