Illegal Alien 01-29-2001, 05:47 AM Have managed to get a copy of Windows Millenium, is it worth all the hassle of deleting Windows 98 etc? Are there many benefits from upgrading? Steve R Jones 01-29-2001, 05:50 AM To ME or not to ME http://www.pcmech.com/article.htm?meornot daveleau 01-29-2001, 05:55 AM The benefits are a little more speed and win Media Player 7 and a little different gui. I did not like it and am working with windows 2000 and Win 98SE. dave Barney 01-29-2001, 06:02 AM My Win88 SE locks up enough already. No way I'm going to run ME. Everbody I know (like my mother, father, brother) who run ME have nothing but trouble with it... Ronald Richard_Cranium72 01-29-2001, 06:08 AM Some love ME. I got one of the first "upgrade" from 98 as Jed Clampett would say,, "PITIFUL" I vote for Win98 ,, stay away from WhineME daverme 01-29-2001, 06:17 AM I agree with Mr Delong, the author of the previously mentioned article. I got ME the first week it was available and tried to install it on a brand new, never before used 500MHz P-III machine (BX chipset mobo). It hung twice and crashed (BSOD) twice during the initial install. That didn't fill me with warm fuzzies so I put it on the shelf for awhile. Later, I installed it on a machine with a DFI AK74-SC mobo (Athlon 900MHz CPU) and it DID solve what appeared to be a power management problem involving standby. Later still, however, it was installed on a machine with an ABIT BX133-RAID mobo (P-III 800EB CPU) but when I tried to install AOL 6.0, I ran into a problem. Replacing ME with either Win98 or Win98SE DID NOT solve the problem. This is exactly the experience Mr Delong had, only in a different order. Roy 01-29-2001, 01:07 PM "me" might be OK in new systems for first time users who have no familiarity with W98. Downgrading from W98 to Wme brings horror stories and nightmares to most who try. W98SE is a worthy upgrade that makes a system more stable and brings very few bugs. rowan 01-29-2001, 01:56 PM I've got to disagree with the above opinions. I have WIN 98 on one machine and WIN ME on the other, and find ME to a fine OS. In fact, if given a choice between them, I would take ME over 98. (the ME version I have is NOT an upgrade, which may/not make a difference) One of the great features in ME is the ability to create save points. If you screw up your system by installing/tweaking/uninstalling, you can revert to a previous OS state. This alone is reason enough to consider it (I use this feature A LOT). Also, it makes networking and updating a snap. I'm not as savy as most here when it comes to the hidden details of OS's. I'm speaking more from daily use perspective. I use my computers a lot, from graphics, network admin., to gaming, and ME has done right by me. Good luck, whatever you choose. r. It is not a ME thing exclusively. Dave loki515 01-29-2001, 05:07 PM I had ME and every time I tried to play Quake3 or Counterstrike I would lock up.Found that i was suffering too many other problems also,I had the same thing the guy said before we thought it was a power issue.Wrong an ME issue. My cousin was using it and another friend andthe same problems were occuring. You have plenty of advice make your choice.Good luck Starmaster5 01-29-2001, 05:25 PM I would go with ME as long as you have done a fresh install. I when I did the update, everything was wrong and nothing worked. This happened twice. Each time after a fresh install, though, things have worked out. Make sure to do a clean format http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif scotter 01-29-2001, 06:07 PM Well I hate to hear all the horror stories with Me as for me I have installed it on 15 machines to date runing from P200's to durons runnign at 1 gig with out any real problems The #1 THING is not upgrading 98 to me you have to do a clean install. on all the computers I've installed it on I find them a little more stable than 98 and I love the defrag in Me it's more than twice as fast as 98's anyway if you already have 98 I'm not sure if it's worth the $ to change but If your building a new system http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif mike wood 01-29-2001, 06:30 PM System Restore on ME is really great for me, since I screw things up a lot. Go Back is third party software I think? Something like $65 and does the same thing in Win98se. I'm one of those who had no trouble, except for conflicts with CompuServe; thank god I have a local ISP now. You can always install the upgrade with the previous system saved; there is an option for this in the setup. Then if you like, restore SE the way it was, no problem. PS: The help file is bigger and better too. mike Illegal Alien 01-30-2001, 03:33 AM Cheers guys, your advice has been very helpful. As i have had no problems with Windows 98 SE, i've decided not to upgrade as i can't be bothered with any of the hassles that might come along with Windows ME. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif SysOpt.com
