Hey guys ive just got my PC ahead of schudule and am already haveing problems with it.
Ive screwed in the mobo to the case and put them plastic things under the screw
Connected the Cpu+ heatsink
Connected Main Power cable
Connected Power switch
turned on and nothing. No fans etc completly dead??
Im really stuck now, the mobo's an ecs k7s5a.
I know its a vague post but ids there anthing you have to do to make the thing have power. On the back there is a 230V 115V switch at the moment its on 230V, is this ok???

230 volts is good for UK, in no particular order... you should:-
make sure the ATX connector is pushed firmly and squarely into it's socket, be sure non of the pins has been dislocated or bent
make sure the MoBo isn't touching the backing plate,
check the plug fuse and the socket is working by plugging something else in, then swapping the fuse for one (of the same
rating) that you KNOW works,
check the switch position on the rear panel,
recheck wiring positions to front control panel
some of these suggestions may seem obvious, but you'ld be surprised at how many ppl miss 1 or more simple things.

I'm going to have to agree with BIGJ...You've got a dead power supply there dude!!:(

the PSU could be damaged, but the fan won't spin unless the computer powers up (i.e. sleep mode = no fan), so don't use that as your yardstick.
Try a voltage check on one of the internal 5v. drive connectors.

Just half inch (Pinch -- as in steal), a PSU offa a mate or buy another one, you never know when an extra one may come in handy . If it works with new un -- dead PSU, if it doesnt, it would appear there something deeper to this... hmmmmnnn (deep thought, strokes chin etc)

Your hardware is FINE! No need to panic and send back the PSU!!!
Check your JP4 jumper (CMOS memory clear). This is set to "reset" on pins 1-2 from the factory and won't allow the mobo to power up. Set the jumper to short pins 2-3 and you should start up fine. Read your motherboard manual, it explains all of this with pictures and explanations!
Good luck with the K7S5A, I've had no problems except I blew it up a few days ago (I'm such a dummie).

I'd have to kind of agree w/Fusion here, before you pick up a new PSU, it wouldn't hurt to try a few things. Keep in mind this board is tempremental at times.
Try the JP4 to clear the CMOS and try it. If the fan's don't even try to spin, I mean nothing, no movement at all. Then it's probably the PSU. If though the fans move, even a 1/4 turn when you hit the power, it's probably not the PSU.
If you get a little turn of the fan try this:
Put the mobo together outside of the case. Install only what's needed: CPU and fan, one stick of memory, video and hard drive. Then boot it up. Remember, you should probably clear the CMOS before each boot until you have the prob fixed.
These boards work great, but some problems can come up. Memory probs, seating of AGP, grounding and too low of a PSU are common culprits.

thanks for all the reply's guys. Ive sorted the issue and after all this it was the motherboard shorting out on the metal bits left over from when i put the new hardware in "stupid ehh"
But another small issue has arrised.
1. The floppy drive light is always on but doesnt give me a floppy error on startup on when i try to use it.
2. I have a BIG Heatsink and Fan but the temp in the bios states the CPU to be at 48 degrees centegrade, i would have thought this was high even for an 1800XP when its idle

The cable is usually on backwards when the light is on all the time. Or you have a bad cable. Does it show up in my computer?

i havent installed windows yet because i havent got a cd for that computer i'll have to buy one today.
Also as stated above the cpu temperature is 48 degrees C when idle in the bios. Id this normal for an xp1800??

I'd only get worried if you start pushing 60C

Yeah, it's okay. Like Big said, I'd only worry too if it get's above 60°. Just make sure you have enough fans to circluate the air.

You are shorted out between the Mother Board and the case. Check to see if one of those small electrical points is touching the MB. Put in more standoffs are poke a piece of plastic between the edge of the MB and the case and make sure nothing is touching. A good check is to unplug all power supply from the MB and then turn on the power and if the fan on the power supply runs without power to MB, the power supply is OK but you are shorted out on your MB

thanks brwod thats what i did. i took the mb out of the comp and the fans spun so i knew that it was a short problem, but its sorted now.
