Hey guys

I have a pretty average comp with a athlon xp 2000 and geforce 3 graphics, i'm running win 98 SE but i'm thinking that it is just too old to manage all my new equipment properly.. I have run Win 2K on my machine before but had some small game compatibility problems.. which is the best operating system for me to switch to, Win XP or Win 2K?

Athlon XP 2000+
340 mb pc133
Geforce 3 Ti 200
Built in sound (main problem was sound with Win 2K)

:( Help!!

Try a PS2.

Frankly, either 2K or XP are fine. Once you get used to NO CRASHES, you will gladly dump obsolete games and cough up for a new sound card. ;)

I just installed Win2k a couple weeks ago. It's played every game I have thrown at it. Except for Unreal Tournament. But I suspect that's because the game is so old. It's a great OS. I will never use 98 again. My 2 cents.

The good thing about WinXP, it has a compatibility mode. So you should be able to run older games on XP. Just have to tell XP to run the game in compatibility mode.
Don't know if it works or not. I haven't tried it yet.

It works for Quake I and II. Quake I needs the GLQuake or WinQuake 32-bit executable though. It crashes and burns on exit, but runs fine.

I have XP. Could someone point me to this compatability mode?

Thanks

Just right-click the shortcut and select Properties. There is a Compatibility tab there.

Well, coughing up for the sound card ain't a prob, i think i'll go with win2k cos xp i find is a little bit to slushy, it for computer idiots, i think..

Ironically, it takes more know-how to run WinXP because MS made all of these helpful wizards, but never took the time to research naming conventions before implementing their own names for things. Win2K responds to a turn or two of a simple spanner wrench and it's pretty easy to dig around in the guts of it. For that reason, you're right - Win2K likes tweakers.

I just tried UT on my XP computer and it runs great. I couldn't get it to run on my win2k machine. Oh well no biggie everything else runs on it.
