My display goes wacky and the system reboots itself a couple of times eacn night.

Might the invoved hardware (soundcard and videocard, both on IRQ 11) be reassigned IRQ's if I unnstalled, let's say, my soundcard, started the PC, then powered down and reinstalled it in a different PCI slot. Then upon resatarting the PC new hardware will be found and possibly assigned to a different IRQ.

I wonder how the OS determines where to put hardware, in feference to IRQ assignment.Found the info below by doing a search. These do not jive with what I have found mine to be:

Typical IRQ assignments for a PC
The list below indicates some of the typical IRQ assignments for a PC:

IRQ # Device
0 System Timer
1 Keyboard
2 Cascade from IRQ 9
3 Com Port 2 or 4
4 Com Port 1 or 3
5 Parallel (printer) Port 2 or Sound Cards
6 Floppy Drive Controller
7 Parallel (printer) Port 1
8 Real Time Clock
9 Video
10 Open
11 Open
12 PS/2 Mouse
13 Coprocessor
14 Primary IDE Controller (hard drives)
15 Secondary IDE Controller (hard drives)

I am running XP
1.8 GHz CPU
512 MB DDR
Radeon 7500 64MB vid
Soundblaster Live 5.1 MP3+

Open MSINFO32.EXE. Navigate to Hardware Resources > IRQs. Click once in the right pane. Now press CTRL-A and then CTRL-C. Paste that data in a reply here.

How are you, Bill? :) Hoping you can help out again!

Sometimes I'll just click on a web link and the system blacks out and reboots. I see that the my NIC is also on 11.

Here is the info on my IRQ assignments:

IRQ 0 System timer OK
IRQ 1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard OK
IRQ 3 Communications Port (COM2) OK
IRQ 4 Communications Port (COM1) OK
IRQ 5 MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device OK
IRQ 6 Standard floppy disk controller OK
IRQ 8 System CMOS/real time clock OK
IRQ 9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System OK
IRQ 10 SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller OK
IRQ 10 SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller OK
IRQ 11 ALL-IN-WONDER RADEON 7500 OK
IRQ 11 Creative SB Live! series(WDM) OK
IRQ 11 Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC OK
IRQ 11 MDP7800-U Modem OK
IRQ 12 Microsoft PS/2 Mouse OK

Hi Rounder. ;)

Boot into BIOS setup and disable one or both Com ports if you're not using them. If you have a USB printer, disable the LPT port too.

Find the NVRAM/ESCD/Configuration Data switch and enable it. It's usually in the PCI section.

Reboot normally and try again.

Tip:

If you have any USB problems with the SiS, there is a USB Registry patch for WinXP at their site. You can also change the driver to "Standard OpenHCI USB Host Controller".

Under "Integrated Periphs" > Set Super I/O > Serial Ports A & B were enabled. I disabled both, as I am not using either. My printer is occupying the paralell port, so I left it as is.

Under PNP/PCI Config, there was an option to "Clear ESCD. It was set to "NO". I took this as meaning, "Enabled", so I left it as.

If all is as you intended, what next? I haven't done so, yet, bet I will look to see if any IRQ's have changed.

USB's haven't had any problems. I only have two connected at this time, but under Device Manager > Hardware, it shows numerous (7 or 8) and they are all labeled as "Other" and "Unknown".

Edit:

IRQ 0 System timer OK
IRQ 1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard OK
IRQ 5 MPU-401 Compatible MIDI Device OK
IRQ 6 Standard floppy disk controller OK
IRQ 8 System CMOS/real time clock OK
IRQ 9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System OK
IRQ 10 SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller OK
IRQ 10 SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller OK
IRQ 10 Creative SB Live! series(WDM) OK
IRQ 10 Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC OK
IRQ 11 ALL-IN-WONDER RADEON 7500 OK
IRQ 11 MDP7800-U Modem OK
IRQ 12 Microsoft PS/2 Mouse OK
IRQ 13 Numeric data processor OK
IRQ 14 Primary IDE Channel OK
IRQ 15 Secondary IDE Channel OK

COOL!

Well, the vid card shouldn't have any more problems, as I am not currently using the phone modem. When I plug-in more USB devices (SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller), there may be trouble on 10 with the sound card, as the NIC is also there now. It would be nice to move some of these to 5 or 9.

Waiting for your reply.

Under PNP/PCI Config, there was an option to "Clear ESCD. It was set to "NO". I took this as meaning, "Enabled", so I left it as. Set this to "Yes" to clear IRQ assignments.

Hmmm....many Other or Unknown devices? You should reinstall the drivers that came with your motherboard. Alternately, you can download here:

http://www.sis.com/support/driver/utility.htm

Unfortunately, there are many patches and drivers there. You can pinpoint what you need better at the mainboard manufacturer's site. Chipset drivers usually clear up a lot of problems.

Just after replying, my display went into a "grid-effect" and rebooted. Perhaps, I have a vid-card problem after all. :( It may be with XP or it may be a hardware defect.

I will reboot and set the ESCD to "Yes".

It's probably not WinXP.

Gotta get IRQs 3 and 4 to take a device.

I agree. Moving something from 10 to 3 or 4 would be more efficient. Does the "Clear ESCD" default back to "NO" or will I, eventually, have to reset this to "YES" when the problem is resolved?

What will cause 3 and 4 to accept devices, or can this be manually assigned?

What, at this point, do you presume to be a possible cause of the latest "grid-effect" display and reboot problem? I know, at this point, it would be, merely, educated guessing and not trouble-shooting, but any ideas?

Does the "Clear ESCD" default back to "NO" or will I, eventually, have to reset this to "YES" when the problem is resolved? Depends on the motherboard. Most reset to No each boot. What will cause 3 and 4 to accept devices, or can this be manually assigned? Forget manually assigning IRQs. Windows won't let you. What I would do is reset ESCD and then immediately run the Repair process:

I know, at this point, it would be, merely, educated guessing and not trouble-shooting, but any ideas? Bad drivers or a bad card come to mind first. I doubt that this is a Windows problem. If you're overclocking the CPU or the video card, you have your problem. If not, first get new drivers and next, a new card.
