Hello...I've just installed a 10GB harddrive and Windows 2000 Professional into my compaq model 1260 laptop computer. I occasionally get a blue screen when I restart the computer, but the real problem is that my modem isn't working. In device manager it says "This device is disabled because the firmware of the device did not give it the required resources, Code 29" What can I do to get my modem up and running again? Thank you all very much!!!

Your IRQ Steering is probably disabled. Go into your Device Manager and open the System Devices branch. Scroll down to PCI Bus and double click on it. Select the IRQ Steering tab and mark the Use IRQ Steering checkbox. The Tabl selections should come to life, usuall #1, #2 and #4 are marked. Ok out of it and reboot.

In windows 2000 Pro., the IRQ steering is located within device manager under "Computer" in "Standard PC", and doesn't appear to be related to the modem problem I'm having. I saw on the compaq support forum that a couple people were having a similar problem and Compaq was offering little support. It seems that this boils down to an incompatibility between the Compaq modem and windows 2000. What are my options, since compaq isn't currently offering an update to cure this problem?; is there another way I can get my modem to work? Thanks for any help you all can offer.

The IRQ Steering allows devices to share interrupts. When the IRQ Steering is not enabled and you add hardware, there may not be enough IRQ's to go around, you then get the Error Code 29 in the Device Manager. The recommendation is to enabe the IRQ Steering. I don't know about incompatability between your modem and Win2K, but it should at least be able to pick up an IRQ. You may need to buy a new modem that is compatable with Win2K.

Just found this link on another thread, it's Microsoft's compatibility list, you can check to see if your modem is there: http://www.microsoft.com/hcl/default.asp

I have a Compaq 1255 model and i dual boot from Win98 to Win2000. I have partion magic 6.0 and have made 2 drive. One big rive for Win98 and a smaller one for Win2000. When i am logged on using Win2000, i can still use the Win98 apps. But not the othre way, probably due to the NTFS and FAT32 file systems. Anyway, when i want to use my modem, i long back onto Win98. It works great. Compaq tld they were NOT going to offer any support for the Presario line and Win2000. Only one problem, have trouble if i restart while in WIn2000. I have to shut all the way down and then reboot in Win98. Hope this helps... Erik D.

Do you know if I could use a PC Card modem supported by Windows 2000. I've never used the PC card slot before. Probably be simpler to go back to Windows 98, but I don't have it on disk.

Bad thing is Compaq does not post drivers for their presario laptops. I couldn't even find NT drivers for mine. I hate compaq, they are total suck. Good luck getting Win2k to run, I gave up after about a week.

I thought about using the PC card modem myself but i really didn't have he extra cash. I do use a PC card for my metworking car and it works great though...
