And the death toll rises as another computer part bites the dust... I'm starting to worry that I'm jinxed (sp?). Over the past few months I've had a lot of stuff died on me?!
1) Matrox G100 - Oct/??/00 - Bit the dust over the weekend for no apparent reason...
2) Generic 250 watt PSU - 12/25/00 - I added a brand-spankin new SCSI card and stick of RAM, then... POP! Overloaded the sucker...
3) Award 250 watt PSU - 1/11/01 - Moving from one comp to another. Died in the 50ft transport. This one didn't go down with a "bang" like his partner (see #2)...
4) Adaptec 2910C - 7/??/00-1/17/01 - Been givin trouble for too long... alright, it didn't work, period!... I just put it out of its misery...
5) Amptron PM-7600 Socket 7 mobo - 1/21/00 - This is by far the most devistating loss of all. My first Socket 7 mobo died. Worst of all, I had plans for this this thing too, it was going to be my router http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif Soon to be wall art http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif
Is this normal for parts to all of a sudden die? With the exception of the PSU's, all the parts just up and die and not because of my fault...
If you would like, please post your dearly departed (comp parts only though) so we may moarn at their loss... or laugh at their defeat...

Might be worth looking at an anti-surge and spike protector for your PCs mains supply. Could be dodgey power coming in?
Things do die, but that seems a lot.
You not replacing bits while using the trampoline? J/K.
All the best, Justy.

I think a UPS might be a good idea for you. All those fatalities in such a short time suggests an environmental problem of SOME KIND and power is the most likely.
Here's a tale of disaster: I have a VGA card with a built in Genlock for putting graphics onto video tape when I edit; cost about $650 in 1995. I had been doing an edit and left my gear running and went to work. For reasons I cannot remember, I went home for lunch (a 15 min drive) and went to my studio for something. Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed that the plug for my PC was not quite seated in the socket all the way so, without thinking, I pushed it in. Well, that house (which I was renting) was NOT of the best construction and the fit between plug and socket was a loose one and the result was two power surges seperated by about a millisecond. The outcome was a blown $650 VGA card and blown electonics on my hard drive, which contained ALL my video data and, of course, was not backed up. I managed to talk the VGA vendor into replacing the card under warranty (which had, again per Murphy's script, expired only days earlier) but fixing the HDD cost me a cool $300+, about the same as the disk cost back then.
Hello,

I had something similar happen to a Win NT Server CD. Luckily no harm was done, otherwise I'd been out a pretty penny...
I doubt a UPS would do me any good since none of the deaths were due to a power drop. And I have a surge protector for surges.
Oh, when I'm working on my comp, I'm usually wearing socks and standing on carpet. No joke. It may sound gruesome and dangerious, but I've yet to kill a part in socks on carpet! (Shoes are a :whole: different story)

-Quantum SlowMotion 4.0 gig 3800rpm. Just died from the 44mhz PCI bus (although it was only for a minute).
-17" "Widoshi" monitor, died when I tried to adjust the sharpness inside the monitor.
-1.44 diskdrive, those things always die, it's just ****.
-My writer makes weird noises (probably one of the motors), I have taken it out but haven't looked yet if I can repair it.
-Afreey 50x CD-ROM player, the CD's didn't spin stable, the CD-ROM started to make really weird, loud noises. Glad I could trade in the shop for a 50x Asus.

Well I think you answered your own question:
1) You are not using a UPS and or surge suppression.
2) You are swapping parts while standing on carpet with socks on. Doing this is a open invitation for damage from a ESD event!(Electro Static Discharge).
These two preventative measures probably would have saved some of that gear...
Regards
BTW-Notice most of your damage occured in the winter months...cabin fever maybe??? lol

I like to wear my Atlanta Braves jacket, sit in a wool lined chair with tennis shoes on then reach into my computer.
Only problem the 100,000 volts usually jumps to the case before I can reach my Pentium3 processor http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
Seriously, another candidate for the obits. is my rescue of a Apple Laptop from my dumpster diving, I plugged in 12vdc just KNOWING that was right.
The screen lit up just fine ,,, then a noise "ffzzsssstttPOPP" now it won't come on.. I wonder why..
OH, the plug on the side in letters .0001 inches high says 9vdc http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif
