i just installed XP Pro and after messing with some drivers I got everything installed right, but when I dial-up to my ISP the modem speaker stays on after connecting so i have this permanent hiss in the background and it's a pain in the *** to put it mildly.

turned the speaker off in the modem driver and even tried muting the speakers, but it's obviously coming from the modem itself.

is there a string value to turn this off?

its an internal PCI modem SoftK56 Data Fax modem.

thanks,

Why not put your PC's idle time to good use by downloading the seti@home client (ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/setiathome/setiathome_win_3_07.exe) and then joining the Sysopt.com Users 2002 (http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/cgi-bin/cgi?cmd=team_lookup&name=Sysopt.com+Users+2002) Team.
UPDATE: To speed up your WU times try the Command Line Client (ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/setiathome/setiathome-3.03.i386-winnt-cmdline.exe) and SetiHide (http://www.scheit.de/seti/1543.zip). Its not nearly as pretty but its much faster than the Windows client. :D
Good SetiHide thread HERE (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=94507). Guide to setting up SetiHide on page 5 of thread.

You'll have to verify this in your modem documentation, but a fairly standard command in the "extra settings" is M1 for disabling the speaker after carrier detected. But this should be the default.

modem doesn't have any documentation. I had to find out what make and model it was through the FCC no. and get the driver from that info.

I tried the M1 command in the extra settings bit in device manager but it has had no effect. do i need to enter anything else other than M1 to make it recognise the command?

No, that should do it. Make sure to make your changes in Dial-Up Connection\ Your connection\ properties instead of DM.

M0 (zero, not the letter O) will turn some modem speakers off. My modem does a strange thing that I can faintly hear the data transmission occurring when connected @ 31.2 kps or less from the modem speaker. But it's very faint.

i tried M0 but to no avail. I can't do it in Dial-Up Connection\ Your connection\ properties as I am using WinXP and it doesn't give you that option.

ANy other ideas?

could I remove or disable the speaker on the board manually without killing the modem itself? would it function without the speaker connected. I'm assuming its one of those little button sized ones and I can just undo the solder on it.

XP doesn't have a Dial-Up Networking folder? Click My Computer on the left side in an explorer view & see if it shows up in the right pane. Or in IE try Tools/ Internet options/ Connections -- highlight your connection in the box & click settings, then Properties.

no, it has a networking folder, it just doesn't give you the option of adding extra commands to a specific connection the way that win98 does.

Your problem is beyond me then. Any documentation you can find to see what if any commands control the modem speaker? If not, you could cut the wire to the speaker, or unsolder it. Tape it over?

thanks for the attempt anyway.

I might try taping it or filling the hole with superglue maybe and then taping it to deaden the sound.

thanks again.
