I just installed Norton System Works 2002 on my XP machine and am about to install it on my 2000 machine. My question is: How many of you keep auto-protect on? I have never used auto-protect and I wanted to know if it will slow down my machines much. Both are are fast and have plenty of ram. Also do you think that it is necessary? I always run manual checks every week. If I do this do I even need to run auto-protect?

One other thing. What is this file? (NAVAPW32.exe) I have auto-protect disabled along with all of the e-mail protection disabled as well. But the fact that this file is showing in task manager leads me to believe that some part of Norton Antivirus is still running in the background. If this is going to run in the background I might as well just leave auto-protect on.

Just wanted some opinions. :)

Thanks

I keep auto protect on all three of my machines. XP on one machine, ME on another. I've noticed no system slowdowns because of it. Except when you send a message in Outlook, it has to scan it first, but no biggie. 256megs and 384megs in the two machines. I'm not using Norton on my Linux box, but the virus scan is set to auto-protect.

I thought the NAVAPW32.exe file was the autoprotect file. Not sure why it would be running if you have auto off???

The only time I disable Auto Protect is just before I install a program. When the program is installed I enable Auto Protect.

Why have Norton unless you are going to run it?

Doesn't slow my Dell Dimension 8200 with XP.

I keep it on all the time, even during installations and burning, that's why I love it more than McAfee.

the NAVAPW32.exe file that runs in the background may be something to do with scanning as windows loads, and the program is ready to scan floppy disk boot sectors and newly mounted drives, not to mention the liveupdate engine.

NAVAPW32.exe is Norton AntiVirus Auto-Protect Agent. I suggest you leave auto-protect on. Why do you have email scanning disabled? That's what scans emails for viruses. I suggest you turn it on. It'll help prevent virus infection.
