Dual boot NT4 and win98 (fat 16)

My computer dual boots fine, but a friend recently tried to install nt4 dual boot onto win98 (fat 16). NT boots but when he picks to go to win98 is just sits there with a black screen. He reformatted and installed nt first then win98 and then he couldn't get to nt because the boot loader was erased from the MBR. He told me his setup was
AMD K6-2 300
48 meg ram
sis MB
has a scsi card but the hard drives are ide
(scsi for zip drive).

While installing WinNT after installing Win98 (which was on FAT16) did he choose "YES" to the "Convert to NTFS" option?

If he did, that's the problem. Win98 can't boot from NTFS.

Just a guess as to why that would happen..

He said he didn't pick NTFS, and that he made sure it was fat 16 so win98 and NT would play well...

This brings a question to mind:

Every bit of info on dual-booting that I have ever read has said to install Win98 first, and then NT. That's the way I've done it, and it works fine.

I have seen others post that you should install NT first, then Win98, like your friend did. I'm wondering what the big difference is? Thanks for any info.. Could this be your friends problem?

I personally load 98 first and then NT.
I have yet to have a problem.
I also divide my drive so 1 partition is NTFS and the other Fat16.
No problems unless you don't give the network an address!!

I ran across a page that said basicaly if you installed 98 after NT you would then just run the rescue disks and restore the boot loader, but leave everything else alone. Then you would have to add windows to the load screen. Thanks for all the info, hopefully he will get it fixed one way or another.
