This is an article from technet:

"At this time, no 32-bit clients are available from Novell to enable Windows XP to communicate with NetWare servers. "

I tried the Novell Client 32 4.83 and it had one noticable problem. I believe it was not being able to to rename root directorys on a Netware volume. It's been a while so that situation may have been corrected with a patch or higher client32 level.
To bypass the workstation logon you can use the Novell Zenworks Starter pack to autoc-reate the W2k/XP on the local machine. Zenworks Starter pack was a free download before but I heard that was going to change (maybe has by now). I have used the starter pack before and it works. Since then I have implemented Active Directory so it's a null point for me know.
I decided not to switch us to XP Pro so I don't have much experience with the Novell Client on it.

I don't know much about Novell, but I tried the latest client on our network with XP and that workstation's network access to the Novell server slowed to a crawl.

thanks for the replies and information---
i did some research on the novell site and they admit their client isn't w/o issues regarding XP--it is the same client used for 2000 and we had few issues with 2000 other then needing to set the frame packet in the IPX bindings from default to 802.3.
I have rewritten the registry referring to windows autoadminlogin creating a string value.
within novell you need to create a dword value referring to the autoadmin login as well....its working great in the lab environment (thus far). Tomorrow I go for broke and image in approx 50 machines..different ages, different academic programs being run from the network.
-----let the games begin!!!
again--thank you for the responses
