I want to replace my generic socket 7 fan whose bearing is starting to make grinding noise. Since I'm changing the whole fan/heatsink, why not use a much better one ?

The only name I know is Golden Orb, so I found their site, but I can't find a socket 7 product. Would a socket 370 fit ?

i was in search of answers for this as well.i'm cool enough with present cpu.but when i get a new one i will need to find one.have a look at www.3dfxcool.com (http://www.3dfxcool.com) they say that theyre coolers were specially desingned for socket A ,but will work with 370/socket7..so in short i guess it will work.

Hello,
Yes, a Socket 370 Golen Orb will fit fine. I have one myself.

I've no idea how a Socket A Chrome Orb will fit though.

Don't get the golden orb. The chrome orb is the replacement design. The mounting arrangement was a bad design as some users managed to crack the die. I had one on a 600 Duron and moved it to 800 Tbird. It was a bear to mount and when I moved my guts to a new case, I noticed the golden orb was cocked on the chip. Had to get a noisy noname until the chrome orb gets here.

Hello,
doebuns, there is nothing wrong with a Golden Orb's clip for Socket 370 and 7 use. The reason a Chrome Orb's clip is different is because of the different pressure requirements for Socket A. The Chrome Orb should NOT be used for Socket 370, and the Golden Orb should NOT be used for Socket A.

Yes, that is my understanding as well.
The Golden Orbs tended to literally grind the Duron core. It is fine for Socket 7/370 use, though.

Be forewarned. These heatsinks are WIDE.

Pretty neat, though, much heftier than my older, noisier HS/Fan. The reason I bought mine was the MUCH quieter fan. I don't have it in yet, since my mobo, an EpOX MVP4a board, isn't cooperating. The placement of capacitors/electrical stuff around THREE sides of the cpu is not ideal, and is keeping the GOrb from seating (the capacitors are too high, and the GOrb too wide).

I am going to have to get out the rotary tool and cut/file to fit. That should be barrels of fun, but I can't wait to NOT hear the fan. I plugged it in.. what a difference!

Did I mention they look really cool?
Pity it's buried in the case and stuffed into the bowels of my computer desk setup.

BTW, I am running a K6-3+ 450 @ 500. What a difference from my K6-2 500. I will bump it up to 550 (5.5 multiplier) when I get this puppy on there. I don't know if my current setup will support moving to a higher FSB as well, though.

Sucker runs much cooler, even overclocked! Unreal!
Now I'm rambling... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Unless my eyes are mistaken, I see that they made a Golden Orb for Socket370 that fits in space limited boards. Who designed the P5A with the ATX power plug so near (almost under) the CPU ?

Hello,
Geez, Asus did put the power connector really close to the socket.

The smaller diameter Golden Orb might be able to fit it. If my calculations are correct, the small dia. Golden Orb will overhang approx. 4-5mm on that side. If you do have to mod it, it will only be a little bit, maybe 1-2mm.
