IE 5.0 works fine on some machines and not on others.
IE 5.5 gives me fits at times, and oddly, EVERY time I click on Kodak Glossy paper at Staples. Strange huh ?
Have you tried the "repair" option of IE ?
Give that a whirl and see if it helps your machine

Why and what to do about IE5 an it's I.O. freeze ups? When checking e-mail and site this happens and I have to reboot. Sometimes for the heck of it , it does this. Any ideas? Have really enjoyed this site and it's members. Thanks

To be honest with you, there is a number of things that can be causing these freeze-ups. Poor Java Script is one of the main culprits. I tended to have the same problems, but also in Netscape. That's what caused me to do 2 things. One, this is what really helped, I went back to using Opera for my browser. (Opera does have some trouble with a few sites, so I use Netscape on those.) And secondly, I went to 98Lite. Now I have a lot more speed and stability in Windows.
But back to your question, try turning Java off and see what happens. Or try a different browser and see if you can narrow down what is causing the freeze-ups. I don't remember the M$ web-site, but they have a pretty extensive info on this problem and how to fix it. (Unfortunately, it didn't help me without going to a basic IE with little capability.)
