Sony DDU1621 DVD XP Problems - HELP!

The problem: When I insert a CD (Music, Data or DVD), or CD-R and close the tray; after a few seconds it opens again, then closes. Another few seconds and it opens and stays open. It refuses to recognize the media.

It's really starting to tick me off and I can't seem to find any helpful tips from Sony or even newer drivers. Its like Sony makes the darn thing, but doesn't support it. Good customer relations tactics.

Is anyone else experiencing something similiar with their Sony DVD or another brand of DVD player?

Is this a hardware issue or software/driver issue?

Sorry, forgot to mention the O/S, its XP pro.

Although this sounds like a failing CD drive (Sony has had some quality issues lately), I would purchase a $10 CD drive cleaner and give the drive the once-over.

Try Uninstalling the drive in Device Manager and then rebooting too.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. Ahhh, do I use a standard CD cleaner or is there one meant for DVDs?

Hmm.. the cause might be dirty drive or hardware error.

Hmm.. doing window updates on XP may help abit on the pbm.

Else.. borrow another drive from someone and test it on ur system with same CD. If it still cant detect the media, use another media.

Okay. Now, it recognizes a DVD, but won't recognize anything else, including a CD cleaner! Just keeps popping the door open.

What now?

I think it's new drive time. :( There are more than one laser in a DVD player. The one that handles CDs seems to have croaked.
