If I'm connecting 3 or 4 pc together to access a cable connection, do I need anything else besides a router?
which brands of routers are pretty good? netgear, linksys? any others?

The Linksys BEFSR41 will connect up to 4 pc's. It's a dsl/cable router with a 4-port switch built in to it. You'll need a lan card for each pc as well as a length (depending on the distance) of cat5e or cat6 cable for each pc.
So far the linksys unit has been easy to setup and use. But no matter what brand you decide to go with try and use the same brand cards as the router you buy. Some will say it doesnt matter. But when you have to call support if theres a problem they wont be able to pawn it off on the other brand.

well the netgear equivalent of the linksys unit I mentioned would be the netgear RP114. just that with the netgear everything plugs into the front. But works all the same.

I sure agree about the Linksys BEFSR41 being user friendly.
Out of the box, plug in the power, push the reset, plug in the cables and my 2 computers came on line.
No configuration... the way I like it! :D :t

The Linksys BEFSR41 is easy to setup but it isn't that easy. You still need to configure the TCP/IP properties that the router should use to connect to your ISP. To do this in the address bar in Internet Explorer type:
http://192.168.1.1
User name: (leave it blank)
Pass word :admin
leave the LAN IP address as it is and
enter the TCP/IP informatiom provided by your ISP
IP address
subnet mask
default gateway
DNS servers
and login: PPPoE( ) RAS( ) disabled( )...
after this is done click apply and with the modem connected to the router reboot the modem(unplug it and plug it back in) so the router will "see" it on the network.

Linksys supplies you with a large full color poster size set of instructions that takes you by the hand and leads you off to broadband land. or whatever you decide to do with your router.
I never said it was plug n play, just that it was easy to config.
