We deal with so much paper through handling contracts, proposals, etc. that we want to move to the paperless way of life. We deal with so many different clients and company's that it just makes sense to send everything in a standard format such as PDF. In an ideal situation we would like a stand-alone, networkable device that we can scan something into, it automatically saves it in pdf format and we can either email it or fax it.

Sure, that's easy for you or I to do, but as for a secretary or an hr employee -- that's an entirely different story. That's why we want just one painless step.

Adobe ACROBAT 4.0 (not the reader, the FULL program) is your solution:
Load Acrobat, put page in scanner, scan FROM acrobat, save in PDF!
