OMG.....I am f@@ked....I have done something terrible to my rig http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/frown.gif Here is the story;
Couple of days ago I was asked to test a stick of RAM, 64MN DIMM PC100, I have agreed and replaced my Mushkin with that stick of RAM. Evidently I have not seated it in there fully, one half of the RAM was out of the socket and the other half was in and seated. check this out; I turn on the computer, at that time I am looking on my motherboard, I see the CPU powering up and then I notice the smell of melting plastic, however I didn't see any smoke! I unplug the cord with the speed of light, already then I had cold limbs. I got scared sh**less! I put the RAM back in the old computer and it works, no probs. there. My computer now has problem; Through out the use, my computer freezes and I have to restart.....sometimes it would freeze as soon as it gets to the desktop and would leave me with uncontrolable mouse and a sound that seems to stuck at one place....sometimes it would freeze while I am browsing the internet.....but it would always freeze, sooner or later it would freeze. If I try to install something, like a program (WinAce, Norton, etc.) it would freeze when reaches the progress bar. Note this I had to set all the settings in BIOS to "Fail Safe Defaults", those are the lowest setting for RAM and speed, to make the computer somewhat torelable, in other words to prevent it from freezing when it reaches the desktop. Now I can't play any games period. It would not even load a game! So basicly it would freeze if there is a semi-advance task to perform. I have tried setting RAM in sockets (DIMM2 and DIMM3) other than DIMM1, it still does the same thing. I have tried reinstalling Windows98SE still does the same thing. Guys and gals I need your help! What could it be that is messed up? I think it must be motherboard...... I will apreciate every single opinion on my problem.
P.S. Windows98 detects my nic, but does not want to install it, I mean it detects PCI ethernet controller and then when I try to install the driver and point to the driver directory - it acts stupid. When I try to run dignostic.exe from driver dir. it tells me that the adapter is not found....
