A couple of days ago I read an AP article about the new web domain names that are starting to show up - like .biz, .news, .museum etc. I followed a couple of links mentioned in the article and set up my machine to access these sites. And so far it seems to work great - I can get into my bookmark list of CNN and USAToday and Sysopt the same as usual - and now I can access BBC.news which I could not find before I made the changes.

I'd like to find a search engine that will look for these "unsanctioned" domain names. I haven't done too much investigation yet - I only set this up about two hours ago - but it seems like the traditional engines like Yahoo and Google won't find the newer domain names. Is there anything that I might try?

If you're interested in looking at the "renegade" side of the net go to http://www.pacificroot.com/updatedns.shtml .

Good luck

Dave

Not a bad idea but I am a bit wary b/c everyone will have to DL a patch and reboot before looking at my site and a regular search engine will not touch it...
I like using Angelfire with the script to killt he popup.

An update on my expedition into the "other" web.

I contacted the folks at Pacificroot and asked them about a search engine. I got a very nice reply back - a surprise in itself - and they said that a good search engine was in the works (whatever that means). Until then they pointed me to www.youcann.org/urls.html (http://www.youcann.org/urls.html) as a source of sites and links. Warning - most of the .biz links are for some guy in Alabama who sells vitamins but at least its a place to start.

The instructions at Pacificroot for setting up your machine are pretty straight forward. All you do is change your DNS server sort order to go to the servers that can find the various unsanctioned sites. I was a little suspicious of running an automatic upgrade so I downloaded the instructions and made the changes manually. I've got ZoneAlarm set at max security and I've run McAfee twice since yesterday with no problems found. As Reagan said "Trust - but verify."
