A yellow cable is usually a crossover, but not always. It must be a crossover cable. As soon as you have a viable connection, you will have a light on each end - regardless of drivers.

If you feel up to making a cable, crossover of otherwise, go to this link:
http://www.netspec.com/helpdesk/wiredoc.html
or
http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/cat5_cables_.htm
This may help you identify what you have.
You also must be able to ping the other box before you can game.
You will have to set the lan cards in each box to have their own IP address:
box #1 192.168.1.10
box #2 192.168.1.11
subnet 255.255.255.0 on both
Happy gaming!
thanks Im gonna go pick up a cable now, Im also wondering ,I did not connect the 3 pin WOL? cable to my motherboard, my brother said it was not needed only if I wanted to go into a computer that is in sleep mode.....can i use those exact box and subnet #s you've written down
thx again

You do not need to use the WOL.
And you can use the IP's I gave you as is.

WOL = Wake On LAN
This is used to startup your computer over a network. Network administrators usually use this feature, but I doubt you'll have a need for it. :D
