I believe the "sti" prefix does relate to scanners and cameras. The reason I say this is that in my TweakUI Control Panel is an unchecked "sticpl.cpl" file - relating to scanners and cameras. (I have neither)
You're running Win98? Check Accessories/System Tools/System Information/Software Environment/Running Tasks. If it's running, it will be in there and you'll get a path to better determine it's origin.

It's necessary for me CMonster. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif
I tweak so much I have to sorta know how to undo stuff lol
The Win 98 system configuration utility (msconfig.exe) reports that C:\Windows\system\Stimon.exe is a stillimagemonitor. I still am not sure what it does, but this may help you.
at http://www.microsoft.com/devonly/TECH/hardware/ddk/DDKdocs/win98ddk/stillimg_2n5e.htm I found:
he new architecture allows a still image device to initiate data transfer to an application. This is called "push model" behavior, in contrast to an application requesting
data from the device ("pull model" behavior). Two logical modules in a single executable named Stimon.exe make this behavior possible:

Yes it is for your scanner, mine won't work
without it.I heard some scanner sotware will
load it when needed, mine doesn't so you might
try unchecking it in msconfig then try your
scanner it might work.

I have an HP SJ5200C, and it had been working fine until today,
when I started getting the same message.
In another forum, someone suggested deleting all the .TMP files
on the machine, because the scanner software generates
zillions of these out of hand. I tried that, but it didn't help.
Eventually I found this thread in this forum,
and ran STIMON.EXE by hand, and my scanner started up just fine. Whereupon I remembered that a couple days ago,
having read that it was for "push mode", which I never use,
I decided that it was just another background process using up resources, and took it out of my startup directory. :x
I'm still not sure why it should be necessary, but it seems to be.
Thanks!
