I need something like Partition Magic to setup some logical partitions on a 40GB drive(new). Is there another product that's as efficient and trusting as PM?? That's a whole lot of money($85) for a drive utility. Any thoughts?

Partition Commander is $40. Be aware that it is slow...seems like 2 hours to do anything, and thats on my Duron at 945 mhz.
Best,

If your setting up a FAT32 or NTFS partition, any Partion Magic version will do just fine. I personally own version 5 and its great. Of course, if your running Windows 2000 with its disk system, then you will need version 6. Otherwise, I would suggest version 4 from buy.com.. $11.75 is a steal!!
Here you go.... Its free!

thanks for the input. Is Partition Manager as good as Partition Magic, or close?? Will Manager do the job if it's only half the price?
My system is a p3-866 w/40gb HDD running WinME. Just got it and wanted to set it up right to start with, before it gets flooded with all that other stuff that makes it's way onto your HDD.

Q: Why do I need your Partition Manager, if I already have Partition Magic by Powerquest?
A: Partition Manager and Partition Magic are different programs. They are complementing each other. While Partition Magic isolates you from small details and does all work for you, Partition Manager lets you see all those details in the partition table (cylinders', heads', and sectors' numbers) and you have to make all decisions yourself. I use Partition Manager for non-standard tasks, such as creating more than one primary (bootable) FAT partitions on the disk, and use Partition Magic to resize partitions or change their cluster size.

...so, if you were gonna setup NEW partitions on a preloaded HDD(that doesn't have any now), I hear you saying you would much rather have Partition Magic for the larger job. Right? Or, did I get that backwards?

Oh, is there nothing you need to keep on the HDD that needs to be repartitioned? If that's the case, just use FDISK.
You would want to use programs such as Partition Manager or Partition magic on situations where you want to repartition the drive without losing the existing data on the disk.
BTW, that wasn't my quote, that was a quote I got from Partition Manager FAQ...

That's what I was saying, I just got my machine from Dell with alot of preloaded apps on it that I don't have cd backups for, and would be lost if I reformatted the disk. I wan't sure if I understood you correctly about Magic and Manager. In my situation, with the OS and some other apps already loaded with no partitions right now, which product would you use to install partitions...Magic or Manager. And are there any WinME ramifications with Manager? Thanks.

Yes, I would say to just use Partition Manager for the task since the program is free. Why waste the cash you don't have to on Partition Magic? The only advantage over Partiton Manager would be the ease-of-use over Partition Magic. That's the trade of for the dollars.
It will have NO problems at all with Win ME. I haven't tried it myself for Win ME, but there are links that show that Partition Manager has no problems at all for Win ME.

Let me ask ya this jimt. If someone wiped out their HDD, and wanted their appz back, what do they do? just curious http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

Biff:
Well, I guess the first thing you should do is backup everything. If that wasn't done and all was lost, in my case I would contact Dell to TRY to get replacements for the preloaded software that wasn't provided me on Cd's.
Other than that, I guess I missed your question.
NDC: thanks for your help, but also there might be some concerns with WinME/Manager from what you indicated and I read:
