system:
liteon dvd 16x/40x
liteon cdrw 12/10/32
ecs k7vta3 v3.x w/raid
hercules II mx

Almost every other time I boot, win98 stalls on boot, usually after most of the GUI is up (when it is loading the system tray devices). It was conjectured that maybe one of the harddrives wasn't spinning up fast enough (on the raid controller), but it had the problem even when there was just the master. the problem may be related to the graphics driver, which is the third thing I install (hercules II MX, running the drivers on their site, 21.81 or so). A third possibility could be the cd drives, as they are acting kind of funny, for lack of any scientific explanation. the dvd will sometimes not eject the cd when it stalls, though the cdrw seems to be ok.

anyone have problems running win98 in a similar configuration?

If you suspect a bad cd-rom or dvd drive. Just unhook the power leads and boot the computer up to test it out. A cd-rom going back can cause a slower boot time. Or a lockup when you try to open my computer. Or run a cd in the drive.

Ultimately, I'm still not sure what the problem is. Because I was curious if it was the driver, I put it back on standard vga and (re)installed the latest agp driver from via. Now I'm running sandra to test and report, but it hadn't finished the file system test before i left for wok this morning (it was sitting there a while). I should probably move this topic to Troubleshooting soon.
