I have just installed Windows XP Pro and all seems fine, except for Red Faction. After playing the game for about 10mins the sound starts to degrade. It sudenly stops making my gun noises and then u can't hear items being picked up, etc...... until there is no sound at all. this sound loss takes about another 5-10 mins until there is no sound at all.

System spec:

Athlon xp 2000+
MSI KT3 Ultra ARU - VIA KT333
Crucial 256mb DDR333 (PC2700)
MSI GeForce3 ti200 128mb DDR
Sound Blaster Live 5.1 player
80gb ATA133 Maxtor hard disc 7,200rpm
pioneer 106s dvd-rom
mitsumi CR 4809te CD-RW
Diamond Supraexpress 56e pro - external modem
Samsung SyncMaster 753dfx 17" monitor

Win XP
det 27.50
dx8.1
via 4.38

Any ideas why this is happening? I had no problems with this same pc using Windows ME and red faction. So i cannot understand it. i have tried the compatibility tool and set it to Windows 98/me and the same thing happens.

any advice would be great

thanx RobUK :)

Try enabling onboard sound and using it. The onboard sound system on the Ultra ARU is da schitt! ;)

ok used onboard sound and it worked fine, no sound loss at all. So its deff the sb live. Any ideas guys what i can do to solve this prob?

Theres no point having a SB Live and not using it.

There are known issues between VIA chipsets and the SB Live. You could sell it to someone with Intel in good conscience and use the onboard sound until you can afford an Audigy.

I would try the latest drivers.
