A strange one, how many of you have tried to put headphones in the front jacksocket on your cd or dvd player to listen to a cd. Well, i bet a lot will be dissappointed. i hav two machines i wont go into much detail, ones a p4 1400 and the others an xp1800.
the xp1800 has a dvd/cdwr/cd, three drives, and the p4 just a cd. Non will play through headphones out of the front jack. A friends will play in his, so i swapped his cd into mine and it wont ???, but if i put mine in his it will.
its not the end of the world but, a lot of my friends have the same problem, now weve checked it out. its strange and has got me baffled.
any ideas welcome
thanks:confused: )-|

Check the volume and make sure you are not playing digital audio when you play an audio CD, windows media player does this.

Remember he is using the front jack on the CDROM he isn't plugging it into the sound card

i had thought to get any sound out of the front jack at all you would have to connect the cd device to the soundcard as i have not got my cd-rom connected to the soundcard and i get no sound out of the front jack when trying to listen to a cd through it

That is correct.
A 4-Pin Analog Audio Cable must be connected from the CD-ROM to the Sound Card.
It only cost me $3.21 (Canadian $)

O, while we are on this subject, does anyone know where I can get a digital cable for my CD-ROM/Sound Card. I need one so I can have Graphic Interface with CD's.

My headphone cable is only 3' 6" long.
So, in order to use it, I have to either buy an extension cable or an Analog Audio Cable.
I prefer the latter.

Sound should play through the head phone jack as soon as the laser is placed over the track on the cd. To do this simply push the head positioner button on the front of the cd drive. No sound card or connection is necessary. Volume will not be to great, but sufficient for headphone.

from experience i know that to get any sound beyond beeps from your computer you need to have a soundcard, the cd-rom is not a like a personal cd player and will not produce sound from the cd without a soundcard to decode it

head positioner button?
This is a verbatim quote from my CDRW Operations Manual:
"In order to listen to an audio CD, connect an audio cable to the analog audio connector on the rear of the drive and connect the other end to your sound board".
No sound whatsoever came out of my headphone jack until I installed this 4 pin cable.
It works great now.
