Got my new P-3 machine and was prepared to get the necessary cable lengths and a Linksys router and connect my older and newer machines for file/device sharing as well as dual internet access.
Now, I'm hearing that cable(RR), as well as others, are preventing a multi-connection (2 machines, etc.) to the internet on a single IP cable address thru a router setup. I'm not gonna spend all that money for hardware and not be able to have 2 machines on the net at the same time.
I've been hearing and reading all sorts of stories about how these companies are rushing to prevent this type of connection to generate more income.I could get another IP from RR for another $10 bucks a month, but hell, I'm already paying them thru the nose.
Does anyone know more about this, and is there another way to do this, or should I just pay the other IP address??

Just got 2 d-link cards a wire and set up both my machines to share, files and folders and my main to share internet. Was told that if I got help from cable company that it would cost me 10 dollars more a month because of the way they do it.By doing it myself it is supposedly free.No probs so far.

could you tell me exactly how you set it up...with twisted pair wire, etc, or what??? I'm trying to get my own setup, but keep running into these roadblocks.

For RR in my area (southwest OH) the router works fine.
Personally, I don't understand how they would technically prevent someone from using NAT to share the Internet connection.
For more of the how-to-network or even share the Internet connection search through the Networking Forum here. This is a common question.

What OS. I have Win ME on my main machine which has cable card, added a D-link fast ethernet adapter, put in drivers, started connection sharing wizard and followd prompts, installed another d-link card in other machine running Win 95 and followed instructions from win me machine and used floppy that it had gotten me to make.Joined the two computers together with RJ-45 connector wire (luckily one of the sales guys makes wires to length).Rebooted as directed and when the 95 one had been rebooted the last time as instructed I went on line via cable.A really good feeling when it did.Hope that helps.I found it cheaper as well.As I understand this method is great if you don't plan on adding any more computers to your home network, more will need a hub or switch, but it is still good until you do.

thanks...I decided to invest in a Ugate 3000 router so I would have a gateway and other things, such as better security.
