I recently received my lite-on dvd and cd-rw drives. I put these in my new system (ecs k7vta3 3.x, 1800 xp) on IDE1 and IDE2. When I boot off the win98 boot disk, it stalls during the pci bus scanning. I think this particular error message had something to do with "Mechanical #2," but i'm at work and didn't write it down. When mscdex was run, it detected both drives fine.

1. is this an ominous sign?
2. what does all the pci-related stuff do in the win98boot disk?
3. Is there a way to fix it, or should i not bother (i.e., customize the boot disk menu to include the driver for the lite-on drives)?

Edit the CONFIG.SYS on the floppy and remove all but the OAKCDROM entry. Take out all ASPI lines. Those are for SCSI. If you're running a Promise controller, you will get SCSI errors.
