Im thinkng of upgrading to a geforce 3/4 based card soon, however with prices being so tight and my pockets being so deep and arms so small im seeking a bit of advice.
Is there much of a performance difference between the geforce 3 ti200 and the Geforce 4 Ti4200 for the 40 quid extra ??
and also if i get either of the cards should i lump for 64mb or 128mb flavours, or is the performance increase not noticeable??
Cheers

I wouldn't sweat the memory difference unless you have the very latest >2GHz system.
Yes...the GF4 is worth the difference. Oh yes! DooM III is coming!

Defintly get the Geforce 4 there is a large noticable diffrence, however I think that you should get the 64mb version to save a bit of money.
A benchmark here comparing the cards

The RADEON 8500 (64mb) is good for what you pay.

I think i'll go for the Gforce 4 4200 and for the extra 16 quid the 128mb option seems reasonable -- when pay day comes...ahh ;)

Good old payday. :D
Wise choice. Just be sure to get the 250/500 clocked card (most 64MB cards), coz 128MB versions (according to nVIDIA specs) are clocked 250/444 (but not everybody follow nVIDIA specs :) )

ND makes a good point, that the 64 MB Geforce 4 ti 4200 cards usually benchmark better than the 128 MB versions due to the faster ram that comes on the 64 MB versions. The 64 MB versions are generally cheaper, too. Unless you are planning on running super high resolutions on a large monitor, I would go with a 64 MB card (probably Gainward, for me)

Graphics Core 256-bit
Memory Interface 128-bit DDR
Memory Bandwidth (GB/sec.)128MB -7.1
Fill Rate (AA Sample/sec.) 4.0 billion
Verticies/sec. (million) 113
Operations per second (trillion) 1.03
Effective Memory Clock Rate (MHz) 480 - 128MB
RAMDACs (MHz) (each have 2 RAMDACs) 350
I take it that means the memory is clocked a lil' bit low??
Anyway -= should be able to o/c that back up to 500MHz i guess??

I'm trading my Geforce 3 ti 200 back in for a Geforce 4 ti 4200 in a few days. Reason being of course is performance. IE, my ti200 runs fine until I enable FSAA. I do that and I take a big hit.
True, the 64 meg card is faster than the 128 meg card. But think about this: games in the future will be resource hungry, and the more memory you have the better your games will run. Gainward gives you a lifetime guarantee EVEN IF you overclock your video card. So the 'best' thing would be to pay the extra $20, get a golden sample Gainward 250/444 and overclock the memory back up to 500. The benchmarks (onions) show that the 128 meg card performs slightly better with same speed and more memory (on quake type benches you gain like ~1.7 fps). I was reading Mr. Shimpi's and Mr. Bennett's sites yesterday (among others) showing the performance you can get from overclocking the 4200--you'll surpass the 4400 and come near 4600 marks.
Now, that being said, I myself don't know if the future games will get here in time to justify the 128 megs. I mean, does anybody know which games will truly need the extra video memory? Unreal xxx? Doom III? I really don't know. Having deep pockets would be nice, but my wife takes care of my pocket size for me:rolleyes: .

One other thing to consider when choosing between 64 and 128 Mb is that with 64 Mb and 4X or 4XS antialiasing, which you probably want to use since you're buying a GF4, you can use a maximum resolution of 1024x768 in 32-bit color.
If you drop down to only 2X or Quincunx antialiasing, resolutions of 1600x1200 and 2048x1536 respectively works though.
My personal preference would be to run with 4XS AA and 2X or 4X anisotropic filtering @ 1280x1024, and then you need 128 Mb.

Indeed - 128mb flavour i think it will be, the price difference is negligible (a weeks pocket money and some loose change should cover the exta expense), now just to raise the rest of the money -- ho ho ho :p
