255=256 and an erroneous BIOS reading. Pay up. ;)

Actually your not wrong. There is NO such thing as 255mb of ram. What is happening is there is a chip (very small) on the ram module that tells the bios what size, type and speed the mem is. There is some compateability issues between certain ones and certain bios's. These range form BSOD's like crazy, to hung sys problems., to mixed brands of ram not working to inaccurately showing the proper mem size. His sys is running it as 255mb though it in fact in a dif. sys would show as 256mb. So it depends on how you look at it as wether he has 255 or 256mb. Tech. speaking of course it is 256mb. Hope that helped.

Basically what BP said I just detailed it more for you.:t

Nice guess, $15-gamer, but way off. SPD EEPROM on a DIMM can only describe the size of the RAM bank(s) in powers of two, ain't no "255" in there.

What you're all missing probably is the fact that the computer reports 640 KBytes of "standard" memory and 255 MBytes of "extended". Add the 384 KBytes buried under the XT compatibility range, and there's your 256 MBytes.

I see. But why does one report full 256mb as mine does and others only 255mb? What I mean is what is the changeing factor, I understand what you are saying but dont know why others dont do that (lose 1 mb)?:t

It would seem to me that some BIOS report it unvarnished while others account for the one MB and boost it up accordingly.

You are all WRONG!!!

The reason why the ram is not reported at 256 is because of one simple fact. When you turn your computer off at night Tiny Gnomes enter your computer and steal 1KB of ram each night. They take it to there secret Gnome Place and prepare for a Gnome Revolution. Most people do not notice the missing ram until they get about 300 KB(1 year of Gnome theft) and the computer reports it as missing. The only sollution to this issue is to install Gnome traps around your motherboard and around your Memory Slots. I am sorry but this is the only way.

Nick, I guess you know what I'm talking about when I say that they're bad for you and besides, they're illegal.

Good explanation though.:r

I think it is BIOS.
Try to insert a RAM plate with a different amount of RAM, lets say, 512MB, and see if it says 511 or not.
If positive, then your PC just separates "extended" 255MB and "standart" 1MB.

BTW, why if I have no any RAM at my DIMMs, my PC won't boot with a "standart" RAM available?

Our computers at work are like that but it has shared RAM with the video card and uses 1Mb by default.

I think that smelanson hit the nail on the head, it has to do with shared ram

I want to hear more about the Tiny Mem Gnomes... that would explain so many unusual happenings. I'll bet they also influence overclocking too. I hear tell that the Tiny Mem Gnome race evolved in Augsburg, and spread from there throughout the known pc world.
They're coming to take me away....

two possibilities spring to mind.

1) you have 256MB ram with a 1MB vid card sharing the system memory. OR

2) a bios glitch. i currnently have 511MB ram installed, individually they both say 256MB but when i put them together it states 511MB. But i aint gunna argue over 1 little megabite

I think the gnomes could well be correct. I've found a site that details many other weird happenings and brilliant computer maintenance techniques - http://www.datadocktorn.nu
You simply have to go to it (the English section) cause they’re so funny and once there was even a guy in the forums p***ed of because he did what one of the tutorials said and then,, for no explainable reason,,, his pc stopped working!

The Memory Gnome is a tiny and unusual creature. He lives in old computers that people throw out. Every night at 8:12pm they leave there homes in search of fresh memory. They get there memory from new computers since it is fresh and ripe. They enter into your computer when you sleep at night and then the fun begins. The Gnomes enter your computer as carefully as they can. They begin to steal as much memory as they can without taking to much so that you will notice. The more ram you have the more they take each time. If you have 512MB they will take 4 times as much as 128MB. Once they have collected the ram they leave your computer and go back to there homes. They somtimes leave behind a virus if one of them was sick. Do not undestimate the Gnomes. They are not always as nice as we somtimes think.

Bipollers changed his tag (from Nuclear physicist to Answerator again) and his avatar! You should run a poll letting everyone choose what your avatar and final taggy thing is, cause you no how interested we all are! Seriously though you should do the poll thing.
