I'm sure there are many ways but this program is very accurate and can monitor multiple networks and up/download speeds. There is a free 30 day trial so.....

DU Meter (http://www.dumeter.com/download.php)

MSN used to have this Internet speed meter to tell you what you're looking for. I don't know if it's still up, but you can check.

Windows has a program to do this, it's called System Monitor.
If it's not already installed goto control panel add/remove an find the system monitor an just add it. Read the help file an you can monitor most thing on your computer!!!!

The best item to monitor w/Sysmon is bytes received/sec on the dial-up adapter's (modem's) com port. This will tell volumes -- much more than the simple connection speed.
