Hi everyone,

I am wondering which of OS WINME or WIN2K PRO is best suited (fastest) for a laptop (INSPIRON 8000, PIII 700, 192MB SDRAM PC100, 10GB IBM HD, ATI RAGE MOBILE 128 4XAGP, ESS MAESTRO SOUND CARD, ACTIONTECH COMBO MODEM & 10/100 NIC CARD, DVD, INTEL 815 CHIPSET...) and the following applications: 3D modeling small part and assembly (PRO/E, SOLIDEDGE, INVENTOR, IDEAS etc), MEDIA STUDIO PRO video editing (small footage less than 5 minute), WINDVD (movies) and internet. Any insight thought is greatly appreciated.

My vote for that would be neither..go Win98SE..if the modeling programs are win2k compatible, which they probably are..and you have to change for change sake..go with that..I am not a big fan of winME..

Depends on what appz you will be running:
If you will only use MsOffice and other (new)appz go with Win2K.
If you will be running older appz and Games too go with WinMe!
WinMe REALLY is the newest, best, most stable and fastest Win9x OS from Microsoft.
It's much faster and more stable then Win98se, Win98 and Win95.
It is also a little tiny bit faster than Win2K.

I found Win2K to be as fast as ME on my system but that may be because of the amt of RAM I have and how Win2K is more efficient with it (384MB). For a laptop, since you probably won't be into heavy 3D graphic games, I would recommend 2000. It is a very stable OS.

Neither.

W2k is a memory Hog.

WhineMe is ,, well It ISN'T what we'd hoped for..(preposition at the end of a sentence http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

I'd opt for Win98 with IE Eradicator(free version) that wipes out the 98 Explorer shell and replaces it with the Win95 .

If you don't have 95, shout at me or click the links in Steals and deals.. 95 can be had for $32 or so..

If Win2K will support all the hardware on your laptop and all drivers available. I would say to go for WIn2K Pro....

For stable work, and even with drivers far from perfect, go with Win2k ... it's also a little bit faster than Win98SE running on P3 ...

Best Regards ...
