My wife's computer sat for 3 weeks and, on first subsequent use, it immediately started freezing up shortly after booting. Freezes occured at various points, nothing consistent. Finally, it started freezing WHILE booting. Lastly, the BIOS reported "CPU changed or non-functional" and that's as far as it would go.

I had another mobo handy so I swapped it out and the new system works fine. Was the old board really bad or did I miss something simpler?

It might have just been a bad board. Check the capacitors, etc, for any damage or corrosion.

that sounded like the processor was overheating and stopped (frezze) when it got too hot!!!
but seiming as it is a P3 and it works with the new mobo i am abselutly clueless! i doubt anyone knows a solution for this ;)

Well, I did take the fan off and re-do the thermal paste. (Fiji is a pretty warm place so I tend to go heavy on fans and making sure that the heat sink has good heat transfer.)

When I have too much time some day (right!) maybe I'll try that mobo again. However, since the nearest source of good parts is thousands of miles away, I tend to be cautious in my experiments. :D
