For some time now, companies like IBM & Microsoft have been working with the music industry to create music formats with features that will limit playing time and sharing capabilities.

Enjoy the mp3 ride while it lasts!

So are you saying that they have the power to kill MP3? I think you're insane. That's like saying the police have the power to make everyone drive the speed limit. HA!

As long as we have free access to computing power and an Internet then there will be MP3s or a superior format. Remember, the recording industry wanted (and tried) to kill cassette tape, DAT, CD-Rs, etc. Let 'em try.

I highly doubt that. But if somehow the masses were lulled into a passive trance and the corporate goons succeeded...good. Maybe then VQF (http://www.vqf.com) would get the recognition it deserves. http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif

The MP3 is here to stay. Everyone already has software to play it and to create it.

The best they can do is shut down (or limit) the distribution network. And even that will be near impossible. I saw this somewhere and I think it is a great quote:

"The fight against the MP3 is like the US governments war on drugs."

People who want free music will find ways to trade it. What about hosting your own FTP server and trading with your friends? It's too easy now. The music industry has got to come up with a new "easy" way to manage distribution in a profitable way.

Yes, maybe they will be able to somehow control THEIR music format, but MP3 is so widely known and used that I don't think we have anything to fear.

Outpatient, what do you mean ? Did somebody put a speed limit on the roads ? http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/wink.gif

As long as the software is on MY hard drive, they cannot do **** about it. I can distribute the music through download off my website if I wanted to and/or give it too my friends. It will never die.

Just like the actions companies try to take against piracy will never fully get rid of it.

Ditto the insane statement.

I would agree that mp3 will be around for a while.

If anything, DVD Audio may kill it. For 2 channel in DVD Audio, your mp3 will be around 50 megs for a 5 minute song.

I agree, we have nothing to fear, there is always a way round every 'problem'... http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/smile.gif.

mp3's are just too popular and wide spread.
