Hi, please help me
I'm setting up a small network, only 3 machines, a router, and it works fine, but in one computer i only get a 12mb/s transfer rate, while on the other 2 i get about 85mb/s.
I tried everything i could think of, changed, nics, replaced cables, switched cables, changed ports, i even installed w98, on that computer and still get the same transfer.

All this computers are running winxp.

The funny thing is that this is only happening in my newest computer...

I've also tried creating a 2 computer network without the router witha crossover cord, but it's doing the same thing.
Went to the bios and i found no network settings...
Updated chipset drivers, bios...
I think maybe there's something wrong with the MOBO.

This is my system:

AMD XP 1800
MSI NFORCE K7N266 PRO
1.44MB FLOPPY DRIVE BLACK
340 WATT POWER SUPPLY
256MB PC2100 KINGSTON:KVR266X64C25/256
WD 100 GB IDE 7200RPM 8MBCH (P/N 75CHE0)
NEC MULTISYNC 19" FE950+BK
PNY NVIDIA GEFORCE3 TI500 64MB
KOOLMAXX COOLING SYSTEM
SB AUDIGY PLATINUM 5.1 EX
HARDWARE MPEG-2 DECODER
SAMSUNG 16X DVD PLAYER
BLK PLEXTOR PLEXWRITER 24/10/40 IDE
HI-PERFORMANCE HEATSINK/COOLING SYS

I'm not overclocking, i'm using updated drivers/

THANX A LOT!!

dumb question, but you are using a 10/100 card right?

Jeanluc

Yes i am...
i also disabled the onboard nic card, when I installed the new ones...realtek, 3 com....

Thanx

If the hub is healthy, it's a bad NIC or drivers.

hi, thanks bipolarbill.
I updated drivers...and also tried using the drivers that came with the nics...
But the thing is i use the nic card of on of my other computers..and it does the same thing!!

I reinstalled windows...so..it's not a wxp prob., i think.

Thanx...

The NIC is bad - replace it. I've seen this before here recently.

OK sorry, i did not make myself clear..

the nic that i'm using on this computer is the one that it was on my other computer, the one working fine. so in this computer the transfer rate is 12mb/s, but if i remove it and place it on my other computer the transfer rate is 85mb/s.

so it's not the nic.

Anyway i've tried a lot of nics...different brands,,but i still get the 12mb/s.

Thanx

Have you tried refreshing the TCP/IP stack? Once that's done, it has to be the cables or the hub.

Jeanluc

Ok, would you please tell me how to do that?, or maybe i did it and i don't know what that is..

What i did was check all tcp/ip addresses...

Sorry about that question, i;m sure it sounds stupid..

BipolarBill
thanx for your concern.

Open Network Properties > Local Area Connection. Remove everything. In Device Manager, remove the NIC.

Now restart normally.

Did you try switching the cables? Did you switch the ports the cables were on?

Jeanluc

yes i did that...
and i switched all cables. ports...

I really don't know what to do..

Thanks

How old is this PC? If it's older than 6 years, the PCI version may not support 100Mbps transfers.

hm, is the hub damage or ? have u tryed to replace it ?

85mb/s seems high for a 100mbit network, are u sure the transfer is 85mb/s ? You should not be able to transfer at that high speed, the highest should be about 10-15mbyte/s for 100mbit network. And 10mbit network about 1mb/s.

ok, i'm not in front of the computer right now...

That tranfer rate thing sounds logical...i 'll check...

but anyway if it is that i'm looking at the wrong numbers..i apologize but it's the second network i make...=)

thanx..i'll let you know what i find...

Oh yeah...make sure that the new PC isn't reporting MB/s to Mb/s.

Ok,

your software may have a bug or something, How do u check your data transfer ? U culd try to use another software to dubbel check.

HI everyone...

ok, it turned out that i was reading Mbit!!!!!

so all i did was replace the mobo, and it works....!!!!!!!
and i did not have to do anything!!!

as soon as it detected the new hardware and restarted...it worked..now i get everything woking at 8,5 mb/s. So i guess that my computer was transfering at 1,2 mb/s.

THANX A LOT FOR YOUR HELP!!!

ps: if anyone could tell me why i had to replace the mobo, i'll be grateful...since all i had was a lucky guess...

:)

Got me. I would appreciate it if you would stop calling MB/s mb/s. There's a huge difference. Capital B is BYTES and small b is bits. there are 8 bits to a byte. A 100Mbit card is just that, but it only runs at 12MByte/s.

sorry i upseted you bipollar bill. I'll try to not to do that anymore if i have another post.

Just trying to avoid confusion. ;)

yes, i understand, i'm a musician and i sometimes get a bit irritated when people uses wrong names or wrong terms..

So as you can see bipollarbill i'm absolutely mad about computers, hardware, but i'm trained at all.

In fact, i'll do something about that, I'll take the Cisco networking academy course...it's a bit expensive,,,but i'll do it.

THANX
