Hi All,
I have a work laptop running WIN2000 and I'm trying to connect it to my home computer.
Right now, my home network is actually using submasking since I have a DSL modem hooked up to a hub with two computers (WIN98).
When I change my laptop network settings to force it to have an IP Address (let's say 192.168.0.4), I am able to ping it from my home computer. Similarly, I am able to ping my home computer to my laptop.
However, I am unable to access the laptops drives and it's content even if I share the drive.
The only thing different is that for my home computer, I do not enable DHCP, whereas my laptop, DHCP is automatically enabled (I don't know how to disable it).
I'm not an expert in Win2000 so I do not know if I'm missing anything in order for the two networks to communicate.
Thanks!

I assume that you are in your home when you are trying to do this.
You say you're using a hub at home. Is it a hub or a router? Does your ISP assign you two IP addresses or one - which you then share?
To change the IP of the laptop, go to Network Properties > Local Area Connection and switch to a static IP address with the same subnet mask and IP range as the others. In System, set up the same workgroup name in Identification.

What kind of sharing/ntfs permissions do you have on the win2k laptop? you may need to enable guest access to the folder. This will allow for anonymous access.
otherwise, you'll have to create a user and password on the 2k machine that matches the win9x login/password. make sure that "client for microsoft networks" is your primary network logon in win98. logon with the username and password you created on the 2k system.
The only problem with setting the ip manually is that you might conflict with another user on the DSL network. If you have a router with dhcp, then you're ok, but you have a hub. you should disconnect your DSL line so that you don't get IP conflicts. It would be way easier to get a router if you plan on doing this often.
if this is too difficult, why don't you make a share on your win98 system and paste files to it from the laptop? you don't have to deal with all the ntfs permissions there. Just an idea. :D

Thanks for the response.
To answer some questions:
I have a hub
I think my ISP allows only 1 address so that's why I submask.
I am trying to do this at home.
I have administrative rights on my laptop.
I tried sharing my win98 but the laptop doesn't see the network, even if I try finding the computer. P.S. I can ping both ways when I submask my laptop.
Thanks for the info on DHCP! I'll give it a shot but I don't want to muck around with it too much since this is my work's laptop and I do not want them to find out that I'm trying to share it to my home network...

ok lets see...u have 2 computers
both with NIC/LAN/Network Cards
1 with a DSL modem
1 hub
do this..get WinGate or WinProxy install it on the computer which has the DSL connection. now assign an IP manually to the NIC/LAN/Network Card lets say 192.5.2.1
assign an IP manually to the other network card eg. 192.5.2.2
reboot the computers ping them using the new IPs. everything should be good to go.
if u still have some probs on the computer with win98 go to the properties of ur network and tell me the things that are listed there.
Good Luck

If you can't get the TCPIP to work, you might want to try NetBEUI. It's a heck of a lot easier to configure, since it is basically auto configuring off of your MAC addresses. Just need to install the protocol on both systems. :D
